3. FOLLOW THE ROSE ROUTE The Rose Route starts at the historic Market Square, which was almost completely destroyed by bombing raids shortly before the end of the Second World War. In 1989, the city began to rebuild the historic facades. They are still a very popular photo subject. The most notable buildings include the Knochenhauer-Amtshaus (Butcher’s Guild Hall), with its many carved and painted artworks, the Tempel- haus with its striking towers, the Wedekindhaus and the Lüntzelhaus. They have all been restored to their original beauty.
Now just follow the ceramic roses embedded in the ground and let them guide you through the city. They will automatically lead you past the most important sights. The basic tour takes about two hours andcan be extended as you like with three add-ons. You can also pick up a brochure with brief informa- tion about the individual stops at the Tourist Information Office in the Market Square.
MY TIPS FOR HILDESHEIM
Street Art in the Nordstadt
1. CLIMB THE HIGHEST CHURCH TOWER IN LOWER SAXONY
Why did I never have Hildesheim on my radar as a travel destination? After all, it is home to one of the most beautiful market squares in Germany! And there’s so much more to discover. The city captivates visitors with its beau tiful half-timbered facades, exciting museums, creative street art and plenty of culinary delights. Here are my tips for your time in Hildesheim.
At 114.5 metres, the tower of St Andrew’s Church in Hildesheim is the highest church tower in Lower Saxony. What makes it special is that you can climb it. The way to the top leads up 364 steps, past the belfry and the old mechanical clockwork. From the viewing platform at a height of 75 metres, you can enjoy an impressive panoramic view over the city’s rooftops and far beyond the region. All the sights, such as St Mary’s Cathedral and St Michael’s Church, are at your feet from up here. Information boards provide helpful orientation. 2. STROLL THROUGH THE HALF-TIMBERED DISTRICT The Kehrwiederturm, the last remaining watchtower of the former city fortifications, takes you to Hildesheim’s half-tim- bered district. Around the Basilica of St Godehard, with its beautiful garden, there are quaint cobbled alleys lined with gorgeous half-timbered houses. Hinterer Brühl is probably the most beautiful alley in Hildesheim. Here you can admire crooked facades, colourful carvings and inscriptions, and immerse yourself in centuries past. A walk along this alley will give you a sense of how beautiful the city must have been before the Second World War. Many of the destroyed buildings have been completely restored. The three-storey, listed Wernersche Haus is a true gem. Dating back to 1606, this building is decorated with 29 carved panels. The Waffenschmiedehaus (Armourer's House) from 1548 in the street Gelber Stern is the oldest half-timbered house in Hildesheim. And Keßlerstraße is a street you shouldn’t miss either.

4. ADMIRE STREET ART IN THE NORDSTADT A real insider tip for Hildesheim is a self-guided street art tour through the Nordstadt, the northern part of the city. The start and finish is at the main train station. On foot, you will pass small and large street art works of the Nordstadt wall gallery. They are mainly found on house facades, but also on electricity boxes and walls. With the help of the free
hiApp, you can navigate to the individual works of art. Here you will also find exciting background information about the artists and their works. I particularly liked the piece by Xema Gonzales. It’s called “Values” and shows a young girl against a green background, drinking the knowledge of the world through a straw. It represents the thirst for knowledge, creati- vity, culture and wisdom. 5. TAKE PART IN A COFFEE WORKSHOP At the Dreielf coffee roastery, high-quality coffee is roasted in a traditional drum roaster. True to their motto, “Make your home brewtiful”, the workshop of the
coffee roasters in Hildesheim’s Ostend district will show you how to brew and prepare really good coffee at home. It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or a real coffee nerd. You will also learn how to make the pefect froth and how to roast coffee.
