KUNSTMUSEUM SCHLOSS DERNEBURG

MARIENBURG CASTLE

Castle with sculpture park, exhibition view

The former monastery complex, which dates back over 800 years, came into the possession of the Counts of Mü nster in the mid-19th century. It was converted into a Tudor Gothic castle by Hanoverian architect Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves. In 1975, German artist Georg Baselitz bought Schloss Der- neburg, where he lived and worked for 30 years. In 1995, he added a studio in the park designed by Swiss architects Steib + Steib. Since its sale in 2006, the castle and the neighbouring estate have been reunited and extensively renovated. Today, the Kunstmuseum Schloss Derneburg (Derneburg Castle Art Mu- seum) hosts changing exhibitions of contemporary art in a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, photography and installation. The sculpture park surrounding the castle, with its expansive wildflower beds, is a delightful spot for a stroll, especially during the warm summer months. Visitors can discover more than 30 works of art, including pieces by Alicja Kwade, Richard Long, Tracey Emin, Jeppe Hein,

Kris Martin, and many others. The exhibition programme is accompanied by a varied and constantly changing offering of art tours. For those more interested in the history and architecture of the site, there are guided tours of the estate every Saturday and Sunday. The tearoom with an integrated bookshop and the café in the cloister offer refreshments and light lunches.

Who would have thought that this enchanting castle, just 15 kilometres from Hildesheim, would become a TV series hotspot? Since Marienburg Castle graces the screen in the Amazon Prime series “Maxton Hall”, it has become a must-visit destination for all fans of the show. Visible from afar, this former summer residence of Europe’s oldest noble family, the House of Welf, rises majestically on the south-western slope of the Marienberg hill. The historic castle captivates visitors with its stunning architecture and an array of intricately designed towers and roofs. A stroll around the grounds offers countless romantic photo opportunities and breathtaking views of Marienburg Castle.

Marienburg Castle was built between 1858 and 1867 by King George V, the last monarch of the Kingdom of Hanover. He gave the magnificent building to his wife Marie as a gift on her 39th birthday. It is the only royal castle in northern Germany. Fate was not kind to the royal couple. Just as the king, who had been blind since childhood, was never able to see his gift with his own eyes, his beloved wife Marie would not live there for long. Before the castle was completed, the Prussi- ans forced King George V into exile in Austria in 1866. Having moved into her new home shortly afterwards, the queen followed the king into exile a year later, driven by political pressure and her longing to be with her husband. She would never see her beautiful castle again. PLEASE NOTE Due to extensive renovation work, the interior of the castle is currently not open to visitors.
