Winter Feeding Advice By Dr Vicki Glasgow, Harbro Nutritionist Winter will be here soon, so here are some tips on how to feed when turnout and workload maybe reduced. Good Doers Monitor hard feed intakes so they don’t pile on the pounds! Use a low energy chaff with minerals (Harbro One Scoop ) or a balancer. Limit hay by using very small holed hay nets or doubling hay nets. If it is not too icy, soak hay for a minimum of four hours to reduce sugar levels. They can still fulfil their natural desire to be constantly munching, keep their guts healthy and relieve boredom without piling on weight. Use weigh tapes and body condition scoring once a week to keep an eye on them. Poor Doers Swap to a high oil, high fibre, low starch feed so that the energy supply is maintained or even increased, but is more of a slow release variety - limiting digestive upsets. Conditioning feeds with a high oil and low starch content ( preferably nuts, e.g. Harbro Conditioning Cubes ) and/or high oil chaffs ( e.g. Alfa-A Oil ) will suit this type of horse very well. Ensure a constant supply of a good quality forage. As the biggest portion of a horse’s diet in the winter, it is crucial that it is the best quality that you can get. Make All Changes Slowly One of the golden rules of feeding is that any changes should be made gradually. Sudden changes can lead to issues from mild digestive upset to colic. Changes should be made slowly over a 7-10 day period. The current advice is that no more than 200g/day of the feed to be introduced should be added/day for a 500kg horse and proportionately less for smaller horses. If you are swapping from hay to haylage or vice versa, ensure that you feed both for at least a week. Yeasts and pre/probiotics can be used
to help soothe over any changes in diet or routine. Maximise Turnout Whenever Possible
Even if the weather is bad, horses will appreciate at least a few hours turn out. Exercise helps with gut motility and shouldn’t be overlooked. If your horse is going to be in its stable for long hours make sure that it is provided with ad-lib forage and stimulus. A turnip on a rope is a great boredom breaker for good doers and those prone to laminitis. The key to a happy horse during winter is to maximise turnout, make the appropriate feeding changes slowly and don’t forget that forage is the most important part of your horse’s diet.

Proud to be supporting the RDA We are delighted to announce a year of support for RDA, which launches as part of our Love Your Horse campaign this October. For every bag of Harbro feed sold in a Harbro store for the next 12 months, the company will donate 25p to RDA groups across Scotland. Retail Director at Harbro Country Stores, Allan Bain explains: “RDA Groups have been hit hard by the effects of coronavirus and we know it is a cause close to many of our customers’ hearts. My sister has benefited from the work of her local RDA group for many years, so I am personally aware how vital the horse interaction is for those with disabilities and the joy it brings to participants across Scotland. We are proud to support the work of such an important organisation during our dedicated Love Your Horse month and continue this over the next 12 months. “ Dominic Ind, RDA West & Central Scotland Regional Chair: “At RDA we are most grateful to Harbro Limited for donating 25p for every bag of Harbro Horse feed they sell for the next 12 months - this initiative starts in October 2021 with their Love Your Horse month. Many know of the extraordinary work RDA does for children & adults helping them on the journey to health and wholeness. At the heart of this are equines - whether it is riding; carriage driving or vaulting and we face the financial challenge of horse management. Do contact a local RDA Group to see our charity in action and volunteers are always welcome!”

Condition & Weight Most of us don’t have access to a specialised equine weighbridge but
Vicki’s Nutrition Tip
Try to condition score at a similar time every two weeks and invest in a weigh tape. If you can ask another horse owner to condition score your horse, it is often difficult to pick up on changes when you see them every day! Your farrier and vet are usually the best people to notice any changes to your horse’s condition as they see them regularly but (hopefully) not frequently.
‘Condition Scoring’ and using a weigh tape on a regular basis is a great way of keeping track of your horse or pony’s condition and whether or not you need to adjust their diet. There are instruction videos provided by WHW and the Blue Cross which will point you in the right direction. It is recommended that you aim for a condition score of between 2.5 - 3.5 depending on what level of work your horse is in. This essentially means that you are looking for your horse to have a firm neck with no crest, ribs that can be easily felt but not seen when standing still and a well- covered but easily felt pelvis. So ‘get hands on’, remember overweight horses and ponies are at greater risk of developing conditions such as laminitis, musculo-skeletal diseases and foot disorders.

Vicki’s Nutrition Tip
Workload Your horse’s workload or activity level should play a key part in your decision on what to feed. The following chart will help you work out how much work your horse is in and therefore to choose the correct feed:
Be honest about activity level,
otherwise you could end up over or under feeding or feeding the wrong product.
Resting
Also includes very light hacking.
Light Work
1 hour hacking 5 days a week, first 4-6 weeks of fittening work. Up to novice level Dressage and Show Jumping.
Light -Medium 1- 2 hours hacking/fittening, BE 80 - Novice level eventing, Up to Medium Level Dressage. Novice-Foxhunter show jumping. Up to 25 miles competitive endurance.
Advanced Dressage, Intermediate/1* Eventing, Grade A&B show jumping. 25-30 mile competitive endurance.
Medium
Advanced/2* Eventing. International Show Jumper. 50-75 miles endurance.
Medium-Hard
Racing of all kinds, 3 and 4 * Eventer. Hunting. 100 miles endurance.
Hard

Lifestyle Your horse’s daily routine and
management may also affect the diet you feed. Factors such as turnout time, quality and quantity of forage available to the horse (this includes grazing) and yard environment can all have an impact on how much or how little concentrate you need to feed. Horses can easily become unsettled and fretful which can affect their condition. When looking at management, it is important to consider the following:
• Assess your grazing quality • Assess your forage quality • Weather • Stabling/Turnout • Surroundings
Vicki’s Nutrition Tip
Remember your horse is designed to be the ultimate ‘yo-yo’ dieter, gaining weight in the summer to build up reserves for weight loss in the winter. Modern management and feeding practices mean that this process doesn’t always happen. Use the winter to your advantage and encourage weight loss in good doers. For example; unclipped, healthy horses with extra condition should preferably be left unrugged as much as possible to encourage weight loss. Conversely an old horse struggling to hold condition should be rugged for extra warmth so that energy reserves are not used up keeping warm.
www.harbro.co.uk/loveyourhorse
Temperament Remember you cannot change your horse’s personality through feeding. You can however help to make life easier for you both by ensuring you select the right type of feed with the correct type of energy sources. Hot Head - slow release energy from fibre and oils is perfect for horses with a naturally excitable character.
Slow Release Energy Provided through fibres and oils rather than cereals. Slow release energy foods are ideal for horses which require stamina for eventing and endurance and they are also suitable for horses with a naturally excitable temperament. Fast Release Energy Provided through cereal based foods as these are high in starch. Fast release energy foods are ideal for horses which need short bursts of energy and power such as show jumpers.
Cool and Calm - although it would be easy to assume that this character would require a fast release energy source it is
important to remember that energy and calories are the same thing, so feeding the lethargic and overweight horse more energy (calories) will only result in excess weight gain and therefore less ability to perform. It is important to look at fitness and condition, as well as energy source. Provide your horse with the right type of energy (calories) in order to suit his maintenance and performance requirements.
Vicki’s Nutrition Tip
Think ‘slow release energy for stamina and ‘fast release energy for short bursts of energy and power. Once your laid back horse is at an ideal body condition and is fit enough for the work expected of them, feeding a small amount of coarse mix or oats (handfuls) daily can provide them with some extra oomph, without laying down extra body condition.
www.harbro.co.uk/loveyourhorse
Getting the Balance Right All horses are individual and require diets developed to suit them. Workload, modern day management, lifestyle and temperament will all affect what your horse needs from his feed. Typically a horse requires a minimum of 2.5% of their bodyweight as food every day which should be split between forage (grass, hay, haylage, chaff) and concentrates.

Vicki’s Nutrition Tip
Think Fibre First - Always try to fulfil your horse’s requirements from fibre (forage, chaffs etc) in the first instance and top up with concentrate as/if required for condition and/ or performance. Don’t forget that if you are not feeding any concentrate or feeding less than the recommended level, that your horse is not receiving its daily requirement of vitamins and minerals. Topping up with an appropriate vitamin and mineral supplement or balancer will ensure that these requirements are met.

Feeding Guide Feed plenty of forage - feeding as nature intended will help keep your horse’s digestive system healthy. Ensure your horse or pony always has access to fresh water. Introduce changes to your horse or pony’s diet gradually. Add chopped fibre to meals to help extend eating time. Feed accordingly to your horse’s temperament, condition and work - you don’t want to end up with a fat, lethargic horse or one that’s too fizzy and excitable! A scoop of fibre before riding will help prevent acid splash in the stomach. Feed little and often to ensure the gut is empty for as short a time as possible.
