TRACK DESCRIPTION The Clinical Service Track is appropriate for clinical faculty who focus the bulk of their professional effort in the area of clinical service augmented by program development, administrative service, community outreach, process improvement, quality assurance, clinical safety and/or educational activities. Appointment in the Clinical Service Track generally requires specialty training, and when applicable, board certification or eligibility for certification. Qualifications include documented interest, ability, and commitment to providing high quality, caring, and individualized patient care and an interest in the teaching programs of the college. Active participation in the educational programs of the college, including teaching and advising medical students, residents and fellows is required.Faculty in this track shall be appointed or reappointed for a minimum of one year and not more than seven years, with the exception of those individuals appointed for the term of a grant or contract. It is anticipated that most clinical faculty initially will be appointed to this track. These individuals are referred to as Instructor, Assistant, Associate or Professor of Clinical (department name). Excellence in patient care and a high level of clinical productivity is expected at all academic levels. Promotion within this track is dependent primarily on the level and quality of clinical care, but the candidates must also add value to theacademic unit, health system or institution beyond excellent patient care. Examples in teaching, research, scholarly activities and administrative services that add value are provide with each rank. Clinicians in this track who choose to dedicate major effort and productivity to laboratory or clinical scholarship may qualify for transfer to one of the tenure tracks.

CRITERIA FOR APPOINTMENT, REAPPOINTMENT OR PROMOTION INSTRUCTOR

Appointment as Instructor is generally reserved for individuals who have recently completed training programs and are just beginning their independent professional careers. Individuals should also be board eligible or board certified. Their scholastic and postgraduate performance and educational background are the major factors to be considered when determining appointment as an instructor.
