TRACK DESCRIPTION Faculty members in the Volunteer Track generally are engaged in the private practice of medicine or are employed as research scientists outside the University of Cincinnati. They donate their services in the areas of teaching, research and patient care. No salary is received from the university. Appointments may be made for terms not to exceed five years. All volunteer appointments within a department will be reviewed whenever a new director is named. A new departmental director, at his/her discretion, may terminate such appointments prior to their ending dates. CRITERIA FOR APPOINTMENT, REAPPOINTMENT OR PROMOTION Initial appointment at any academic rank in this track is defined by departmental criteria. The qualified individual must offer a necessary service such as teaching, research, or university and community service. An annual commitment of approximately 100 hours to the college is ordinarily expected; however, a shorter time commitment is appropriatefor individuals who have rare expertise and/or provide demanding services over shorter periods of time, such as the supervision of a core clinical clerkship, a preceptorship, or an intensive, short graduate course. Credit is also earned by regular participation in college seminars and conferences such as grand rounds. INSTRUCTOR Appointment as Instructor requires a commitment by a qualified individual to contribute in a minimal, but meaningful, way to the departmental teaching, research, or clinical responsibilities. The candidate may have recently completed training and/or post- graduate work and thus has limited professional experience. A high aptitude for the candidate's area of expertise must be indicated in letters from mentors or other appropriate individuals. ASSISTANT PROFESSOR Candidates for appointment, reappointment, or promotion to Assistant Professor have fulfilled the expectations described for appointment to Instructor. Appointment as Assistant Professor requires documentation of qualifications and expertise in an area of departmental responsibilities such as teaching, research, or clinical care.
