TRACK DESCRIPTION Individuals appointed to this track are expected to develop and contribute to the diverse areas of academic responsibilities including research, teaching/mentoring and service. An ongoing record of externally funded high quality research is of paramount importance for all faculty in the Research Tenure Track. The quality and productivity of the candidate's research are judged by several indicators. These include: the candidate's role in well focused, significant research investigations as project initiator, principal investigator and leader, the contribution of the candidate to team science initiatives as a key co- investigator or co-leader, and the ongoing publication of manuscripts in high quality peer- reviewed journals. In addition, there should be evidence of consistent efforts to prepare research proposals that are competitive for funding by national funding agencies. It is expected that candidates maintain a successful program through a record of sustained extramural funding. Research competence and productivity alone do not ensure appointment, reappointment, or promotion in the Research Tenure Track. In addition, significant contributions must be demonstrated in the area of teaching. In general, teaching includes instruction and mentoring of undergraduate students, medical students, graduate and postgraduate trainees and/or involvement with other educational programs appropriate to the mission of the department (e.g. continuing medical education, graduate program leadership). Service and/or administrative activities are also components that are carefully considered in decisions regarding reappointment, promotion or tenure, especially those that represent essential components of team science and/or leadership roles in building programs and centers. Tenure is granted in recognition that the faculty member has fulfilled, the qualities of a scholar and has demonstrated sustained excellence in teaching/mentoring, research, and/or patient care, as well as service activities. Tenure implies a long-termcommitment by the department, college or university to the qualified individual and requires the continuing dedication of the tenured faculty member to his/her discipline, department, the college and the university. Promotion to Associate Professor is usually not sought until a candidate has been in his/her current rank for 5 years, while promotion to Professor is usually not sought until
