FEB20 EDITION - Digital

ARTICLE Inspector Michelle Plumpton - Tasmania Police The Christmas and New Year period is one of the busiest times for Tasmania Police and this year we were again out in force reminding motorists to be safe on our roads. From midnight on 21 December 2019 until midnight 1 January 2020, Tasmania Police joined with other Australian policing jurisdictions in the high-profile national operation, Operation Crossroads. Tasmania Police targeted known hotspots for drink drivers and drug drivers and patrolled alternative routes out of towns and cities, targeted the back streets, rural roads and entertainment districts. During this time period, Tasmania Police also conducted many other road safety operations that were supported by considerable media exposure, and focused on education, traffic law compliance and driver behaviour. There was, as always, a particular focus on high-risk behaviours, known as the ‘fatal five’: • Seatbelts – make sure you and your occupants are properly restrained; • Speeding – drive to the conditions and stay within the posted speed limit; • Alcohol/drugs and driving do not mix; • Distractions – stay alert and focus on the road ahead; and • Fatigue – if you are tired, safely pull off the road and rest. The following statistics details our activities during the above Crossroad period, relative to alcohol and drugs. Enforcement activities 2019/2020 Random breath tests 26,504 Motorists charged with drink driving offences 91 Oral fluid tests conducted 225 Positive oral fluid tests 86 Fatalities 0 Serious Crashes 0 In the best possible result, Tasmania did not have any fatal or serious road crashes for the Operation Crossroads period.
