THE REALITY OF HOME SECURITY 3 Common Home Security Myths Debunked

HOME SECURITY SYSTEMS DON’T DETER INTRUDERS

Home security may seem pretty straightforward, but countless myths persist — and abiding by any of these myths could mean losing your peace of mind. So, if you’ve ever believed any of these common misconceptions about protecting your home, you might want to think again. BURGLARS MOSTLY BREAK IN AT NIGHT Despite what you might see on TV, most break-ins occur during the daytime when all the occupants of the home are at work or at school. A nighttime burglary may mean you could catch the perpetrator in the act, but protecting your home when it’s most likely to be burglarized is possible with a good home security system. BREAK-INS ARE LESS LIKELY IN RURAL AREAS Just because fewer people reside in the immediate vicinity of your home doesn’t mean you’re safer. In 2007, one study found that burglary rates were 30% higher in the rural Pocono Mountain region than they were in the nearby Philadelphia Metro Area. Another study found that the risk of injury or death as a result of violent crime or accidents is 20% more likely in rural areas than in urban areas. So, having neighbors a half-mile down the road doesn’t make your property burglary-proof.

Wherever you live, we can help you make it safe. Burglary is a crime of opportunity. Eighty-three percent of burglars interviewed in one study said they would check for an alarm before they robbed a house, and if one was present, they would find a different target. Most also said they would abandon a break- in if they triggered an alarm. Burglars always look for the houses with the fewest obstacles, so anything from simple deadbolt locks to state-of-the-art security systems can deter intruders.
