Adding physical therapy to your training regime can prevent injury, help you train more effectively and have you run the marathon of your life on race day. Curious? Talk to our physical therapist about ways to up your running game. Traditional Marathon Training Unlike other endurance sports, the only way to train for a long-distance running race is to run long distances. There are hundreds of books and thousands of training programs that are designed to help beginning runners, or even non-runners, go from couch potato to marathon finisher. Most use some form of the short distance, middle distance, short distance, long distance schedule to help beginners become accustomed to pacing, nutrition, and hydration. The best training programs address the psychological aspects of running a marathon as well as the physical. More experienced runners

find that incorporating cross-training and short-distance speed work into their routine helps improve their race times, but they still commit to ever- increasing distances in their "long run". Throughout the training process, most runners live in constant fear of "the injury". Shin splints, plantar fasciitis, stress fractures, and iliotibial band syndrome often plague beginning and experienced runners alike due to poor form, poor foot support and poor recovery. Regardless of the injury, runners suddenly find themselves forced to cease all training activities until the inflammation subsides and the body heals. This could have devastating effects on a training schedule or even require missing the race altogether.

Marathon Training + Physical Therapy

Even if injury prevention isn't your top priority, physical therapy can help you improve your form and time. As they progress through physical therapy, many runners find they are going faster than ever before. Most find they have less muscle soreness and discomfort after long runs. Several even see their endurance dramatically improve. Whether you are a non-runner attempting a marathon for the first time or an experienced runner training for their thousandth race, adding physical therapy to your training program will help prevent injury, increase endurance and improve your overall form. Call our office today to schedule your consultation with our physical therapist.

Although many runners turn to physical therapy to help them heal and recover after a devastating injury, few understand the value of incorporating physical therapy into their normal training routine. When you consider what physical therapists have to offer, it's not a stretch. These highly educated medical professionals are experts in movement. Not only can they assess how you move, they can find limitations in joint and muscle strength, range of motion, balance, and gait that can predictably lead to a training injury. In other words, they can find problems before they become problems. A physical therapist can then prescribe specific exercises (including stretches, weight training and range of motion exercises) that prevent injuries from occurring.

Exercise of the Month Try this movement if you are experiencing any pain.

LOWER TRUNK ROTATIONS Lying on your back with your knees bent, gently rock your knees side-to-side. Perform this 10-15 times in each direction.

Many running performance issues and injuries that runners suffer from are caused by poor running technique and weakness of specific muscles of the core and legs. Using Dartfish software, we analyze how you run and test out different muscles to find out if these areas are contributing to speed loss or injury. “Jerry and his team are excellent at everything they do, and they do a lot! I came to Jerry looking for help rehabbing my injured knee, and with summer conditioning for my collegiate rowing season. He not only completely relieved my pain, but also helped shape a workout plan specifically for me that would push me hard every session, and get me ready for the season. The level of commitment to both rehabbing my injury, and helping me achieve my goals as an athlete was amazing!" - Timothy N.
