Traditional Marathon Training Unlike other endurance sports, the only way to train for a long-distance running race is to run long distances. There are hundreds of books and thousands of training programs that are designed to help beginning runners, or even non-runners, go from couch potato to marathon finisher. Most use some form of the short distance, middle distance, short distance, long distance schedule to help beginners become accustomed to pacing, nutrition, and hydration. The best training programs address the psychological aspects of running a marathon as well as the physical. More experienced runners
find that incorporating cross-training and short-distance speed work into their routine helps improve their race times, but they still commit to ever- increasing distances in their "long run". Throughout the training process, most runners live in constant fear of "the injury". Shin splints, plantar fasciitis, stress fractures, and iliotibial band syndrome often plague beginning and experienced runners alike due to poor form, poor foot support and poor recovery. Regardless of the injury, runners suddenly find themselves forced to cease all training activities until the inflammation subsides and the body heals.
