EASTERN PROVINCE

Jenkins: The Eastern Province prides itself on being The Flagship Province. We take very seriously our intent to be first among equals. We strive to lead the fraternity in all measurable metrics used to measure success in the fraternity. We often lead the Fraternity in number of life members, members, and financial contributions to support fraternity initiatives. The Eastern Province is the best in Kappa Alpha Psi ® due to its membership. This area of the country attracts some of the great- est members of our fraternity. The membership is diverse. We are blessed by being the home to more members in good standing than any other province. Our size is a signifi- cant factor to our wealth which is attributes to our ability to provide financial support towards the frater-

tive role in my young career. My first job out of law school was given to me by a fellow member of the Washington (DC) Alumni Chap- ter. This job helped me finance taking the Virginia State Bar exam and provided me my first introduc- tion to the legal community. Over the last 20 plus years, I can’t recall all the times fraternity members have helped to foster and advance my career. Most importantly, the fraternity has always provided inspi- ration and motivation. Journal: How do you administer the role as Province Polemarch? Jenkins: I see the role as Prov- ince Polemarch as it is defined by the Constitution of Kappa Alpha Psi ® . That is, he is the chief admin- istrative officer within a province. I

opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives. This is my favorite part of my job. I spend most of my time helping citizens in desperate need. More often than not my clients are not the wealthy or the privi- leged. Sometimes through my work I am able to reunite families, assist in giving someone a second chance or prevent a miscarriage of justice. Journal: How has Kappa Alpha Psi ® played a role in your legal or educa- tional career? Jenkins: Kappa Alpha Psi ® has played a significant role in both my educa- tional and legal career. As a college student, it was my desire to become a member of the fraternity which in- spired me achieve in the classroom. I knew there would be little chance of

me ever becoming a member if I did not have good grades. As a student at Howard University in the late 1980s, I knew grades would have a signifi- cant impact on my chances of ever becoming a member. Once I became a member and graduated I enrolled in law school at the George Washington University. It was a fellow member of the fraternity that introduced me to the idea of attending law school at George Washington. He was a fellow initiate of the Xi chapter who also graduated from the George Wash- ington University School of Law. He was instrumental in my admissions and assisted me with securing the financial assistance necessary for me to attend. After law school, Kappa Alpha Psi ® continued to play a posi-

do not confuse that role with being an executive officer. The duties are limited to providing regional sup- port to the Grand Polemarch in the enforcement of fraternity rules and implementation of Grand Chapter policies. Journal: How has Kappa’s Six- Point Plan played a role in your Province activities? Jenkins: It has served as a guide to ensure that all chapters in the province are coordinating their efforts towards the implementation of the Grand Polemarch’s goals and objectives of the Fraternity.

Journal: Any last thoughts? Jenkins: All members are equally responsible for the wellbeing of the fraternity. We all drink from the same canteen and we all bear the same responsibility. Lastly, of all the accomplishments I have enjoyed as a member now surpasses the fact that since the day I took the oath of membership, March 20, 1992, I have not experienced a day as a non- financial member. At this point, it is 25 consecutive years and count- ing. When I made my pledge, I was serious. I believe my tenure as a member demonstrates such.
