just one percent of their time to non-profits in need, it would add up to 5,000,000 hours, annually. That’s like having a firm of 2,500 people working full time for the good of the public. A Baltimore-based interior architecture firm known as The Verve Partnership was more than willing to share their time and talents. They committed themselves to an organization called The One Percent, which allowed them

to connect with a local non- for-profit organization who was desperately in need of a redesign. Volunteers of America-Ches- apeake was the perfect fit, and once the organization was given clearance to contact The Verve Partnership they began to discuss an overhaul of their 1970s-era Chesapeake-based office, located in what was for- merly a medical building. The Verve Partnership’s managing principal, Kelly Ennis , met with the new CEO of Volunteers for America- Chesapeake who was working on redefining the program’s structure. He asked, “How can this space better serve our employees—who could then better serve the community?” The project team was faced with a few design challenges. First, the second floor housed most of their 30+ employees; in some cases three people were sharing a single office space. Second, there was no place for collaboration—a single, small conference room served as the organizations only meeting space. Third, the exit stair tower acted as the main entrance—offering poor visibility and lacking any reference to the organization’s missions or values. By partnering with Marks Thomas Architects and Mackenzie Commercial Contracting , The Verve Part- nership was able to deliver a new collaborative workplace design, complete with brand integration. The end product was the design of a transformed space; a dynamic new first floor entry way will showcase the organization’s brand values. Open workspaces will make it possible for collaborative productivity. n
