Carer Updates Live In and Visiting Service Merge
Live In Carer Travel Please do not book or pay for your own train travel the team need to use our online platform – Clarity. You will receive a ticket for the train you need to get to ensure you arrive in placement on time. We do not purchase anytime tickets, so it is vital you are punctual. The expenses policy states that expenses over 3 months will not be paid. All train travel should be cooked via carer services. Taxis should only be used for local travel to and from the train station and should not be the preferred mode of transport. If you wish to take a taxi further, we will pay the cost of the train journey, and you will be expected to pay the balance. Punctuality It is vital you arrive on time, but we all know that unexpected delays do occur. If you are held up, please make sure you inform carer services or the branch of your expected time of arrival. Concerns whilst in placement Raise a notification form, call the office, write an email speak to Carer Services. Please remember there is always someone who can help you, you are never alone. However, it is vital that you record anything that is a concern or alarm to you about your customer or environment whilst in placement. Sickness/Inability to work. If you are unable to work due to sickness you must follow the absenteeism policy and notify your manager by telephone by 08.30 on the first day of sickness. We provide care to the most vulnerable people and often they are awaiting your arrival so the earliest notice of your inability to work is appreciated. 3
We have had some really great feedback on the merging of our services. We have heard from our Live In Carers that they feel more included and part of a team now they are affiliated to a branch whilst working. Carer Services and the branch teams work very closely together, and we continue to build on this foundation for the best outcomes for our customers and also our carer workforce. Please remember if you cannot get hold of your branch you can always call Carer Services for support. Important number: 01789 767534. Carer services work 7 days a week from 08:30 – 17:30 and out of hours pick up all calls after this time. Live In Carers Expenses Submit via email to cssh@helpinghands.co.uk All expenses need to be submitted by the 5th of each month at the latest to be included in your monthly pay. We would actively encourage you to not store up your expenses and submit after each placement. You need to complete the expenses claim form and attach all receipts with dates and amounts clearly visible. Food whilst in placement will only be accepted if agreed by the Manager and no more than £40 is spent each week. You need to complete a financial transaction and leave the receipts in the property. If for any reason you have been requested to purchase food and claim it back, you must ensure you have a photo of the full receipt and submit on an expense claim form.

At Helping Hands, we’re lucky to see incredible moments every day. This story is one we’re especially proud to share. Earlier this year, we met Darren. He lives with several health conditions and uses a wheelchair. From the beginning, he and his wife shared something important with us: they were looking for more than care. They were hoping to find a friend. Martin, one of our carers, has a natural warmth and a genuine ability to connect with others. It was clear he would be a great match. Darren’s goal has been to return to the things he enjoys, including spending time in the community and going back to football games. When the Tryfest festival took place in Letchworth, Darren asked Martin to join him. Martin happily agreed. Darren’s big day out
They spent the day together, sharing laughs, enjoying good conversation and making memories. The experience marked a meaningful moment for Darren as he works towards greater independence. A football match is next on his list.
Martin also supports Helping Hands in the community. He works closely with his wife, who is a social worker, to help bring in new opportunities and assessments for those who need support.

Ice cream time Theresa, one of our carers, recently took Len on two lovely trips to one of his favourite local places, Wolfridge Alpaca Barn. It added something really special to his week. They enjoyed a jacket potato and a coffee together while chatting about memories and familiar places. It was a calm, comforting outing that brought a lot of joy. Last week included ice cream. This week, they took a short walk to visit the alpacas up close. There’s even talk of new arrivals at the barn, which is already creating some excitement. Len has always enjoyed Wolfridge. He even celebrated his 90th birthday there last October. Being somewhere familiar and peaceful clearly lifted his spirits. It gave him the chance to get out, enjoy the fresh air and spend quality time doing something he loves.
Francine’s birthday celebration Earlier this month, one of our customers, Francine, celebrated her 100th birthday with her family and our carers. It was a lovely celebration filled with laughter, happiness, and plenty of cake. The room was full of smiles as everyone came together to mark such a special occasion. To capture the moment, the whole family gathered for a group photo, creating a lasting memory of Francine’s remarkable milestone.

A message by our amazing carer, Anna It’s Not Just a Weekend Job I started working in care a year ago, hoping to find a weekend job to support some house renovations. My full-time role as a Purchase Ledger Controller felt worlds apart, and I wasn’t sure how I’d manage both. In the beginning, I had doubts. I’m emotional and sensitive, and I wasn’t sure how I’d cope with providing personal care, especially for male customers. But once I began, it all started to make sense. One of the carers who trained me said, “You’ve got empathy. You’ll be great at this.” That stayed with me. Now, I find myself looking forward to weekends. Care work has become a part of my life that I truly value. I enjoy checking the rota, catching up with the lovely people I support, and being part of something that feels meaningful. It’s also helped my mental wellbeing. The role brings structure, purpose, and a real sense of joy. I had been looking for extra income, but what I found was a whole new part of myself.
Happy Birthday!

The team had some wonderful conversations and met many friendly faces. We’re proud to be part of such a vibrant community and to share how we’re here to lend a helping hand to those who need it most.

Celebrating your impact We’re proud to share our latest Impact Report, snapshot of the difference we make every day at Helping Hands. It’s more than just numbers; it’s a celebration of the compassion, dedication, and heart you and your teams bring to life. The report highlights the real-world impact of our care, blending data with stories from our customers and carers. From everyday moments to life-changing support, these connections show the true value of what we do. As the care sector continues to evolve, our focus remains the same: delivering quality, person-centred care that helps people live well in the homes and communities they love.
Last month, we had the honour of attending the HealthInvestor Awards, where the incredible work of our carers and teams was celebrated alongside the best in the sector. A huge congratulations to our Chair, Jane Ashcroft, for receiving the Outstanding Contribution award an inspiration to us all. This recognition is really a reflection of every carer who shows dedication, kindness, and compassion every single day. Helping Hands was also named a finalist for Provider of the Year (Domiciliary Care), highlighting the real difference our carers make in people’s lives. From providing essential support at home to offering friendship and companionship, their commitment helps people live with dignity and joy. These achievements belong to every one of our carers who go above and beyond, often unseen, to deliver outstanding care. Celebrating Our Carers’ Incredible Impact at the HealthInvestor Awards

A Little Sunshine Self-Care The sunshine is out (finally!) and while it can lift our mood, it’s still important to take care of ourselves while supporting others. 💧 Sip and smile Keep a cold water bottle handy and aim to sip often—even when you're busy. Add a slice of lemon or cucumber for a refreshing twist! 👟 Dress for the day Lightweight, loose-fitting clothes and comfy shoes will help keep you cool and comfortable. Pop on a sun hat or sunglasses if you’re out and about. 🍉 Snack smart Opt for light, refreshing snacks like fruit, yoghurt or a handful of nuts. Watermelon, anyone? 🌳 Seek the shade If you’re travelling between visits, find a shady spot to take a quick breather. Even 5 minutes can help recharge your batteries. 🎶 Feel-good moments Play your favourite upbeat song in the car or take a moment to enjoy the sunshine on your break. Small joys = big boosts. 🧊 Cooling tricks Keep a mini cooling spray or damp flannel in your bag for an instant cool- down. Or run your wrists under cold water for 30 seconds—it really works!
Enjoy the sunshine, but don’t forget: your wellbeing matters too. You can’t pour from an empty cup, so top up your energy whenever you can.
