At Helping Hands, we’re lucky to see incredible moments every day. This story is one we’re especially proud to share. Earlier this year, we met Darren. He lives with several health conditions and uses a wheelchair. From the beginning, he and his wife shared something important with us: they were looking for more than care. They were hoping to find a friend. Martin, one of our carers, has a natural warmth and a genuine ability to connect with others. It was clear he would be a great match. Darren’s goal has been to return to the things he enjoys, including spending time in the community and going back to football games. When the Tryfest festival took place in Letchworth, Darren asked Martin to join him. Martin happily agreed. Darren’s big day out
They spent the day together, sharing laughs, enjoying good conversation and making memories. The experience marked a meaningful moment for Darren as he works towards greater independence. A football match is next on his list.
Martin also supports Helping Hands in the community. He works closely with his wife, who is a social worker, to help bring in new opportunities and assessments for those who need support.
