HULLABALOO PRESS MARKS NINE YEARS AT UINDY
A joyful ruckus fills the air as the UIndy community gathers in Hullabaloo Press’s studio to celebrate the art of letterpress. A veritable rainbow of prints covers the studio walls as presses manned by UIndy Art & Design students crank out custom Grady the Greyhound prints. Meanwhile, guests explore two special collections hosted in the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center Gallery. What began as a niche celebration of the letterpress has grown into a beloved campus tradition—and a testament to the resurgence of printmaking at UIndy.
Hullabaloo 2025 marked nine years of letterpress at the University of Indianapolis. Two-time graduate Katherine Fries ’07 ’11 (Studio Art, MA in Studio Art) returned to UIndy as an associate professor specifically to re-establish printmaking and cultivate an interest in letterpress in the Department of Art & Design. Since 2016, Hullabaloo Press has grown from one pilot class operating out of a small storage area with only two presses to a robust program offering print classes every semester—and access to more than a dozen presses. In less than a decade, what began as a modest
experiment has evolved into a thriving printmaking studio. The expansion was made possible thanks to an outpouring of community support, from UIndy alumni who donated to the program to fellow printmaking institutions like the Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, which provided mentorship and educational resources. “We are grateful for the support of the Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum,” said Fries. “They have been incredible community partners and mentors
