FBS, FCS, D-II — What Does It All Mean? A Breakdown of College Football’s Divisions College football is one of the most beloved sports in America, but its structure can feel genuinely confusing to casual fans. You hear terms like FBS, FCS, Division II, and Division III tossed around, and it’s not always clear what separates them. Here’s a simple breakdown. The NCAA divides college football into three main divisions: Division I, Division II, and Division III. Division I is the top tier and is further split into two subdivisions — the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). This split happened in 1978, when the larger, wealthier programs broke off to form their own competitive class. FBS is what most people picture when they think of college football. Programs like Alabama, Ohio State, USC, and Arizona State compete here. These schools offer the maximum number of athletic scholarships (85), play in massive stadiums, and their seasons
culminate in the College Football Playoff. The money involved is enormous — major conferences earn hundreds of millions annually in media deals. FCS programs are still Division I, but operate with fewer scholarships (a maximum of 63, divided among more players) and smaller budgets. They run their own bracket-style playoff tournament each fall, which many fans argue is actually more exciting and accessible than the FBS system. Schools like North Dakota State and Montana have built genuinely elite FCS programs with passionate fan bases. Division II and Division III round out the landscape. D-II schools offer partial scholarships and compete at a high level regionally, while D-III programs offer no athletic scholarships at all — athletes compete purely for the love of the game. Both divisions hold their own playoffs and produce excellent football. Understanding these tiers helps explain the resource gaps, recruiting differences, and game-day atmospheres you see across college football. No matter the level, the passion is real.
