MAA 2018 New Hire Benefits Guide

Affordable Care Act In 2014, the Affordable Care Act implemented the individual mandate which requires most individuals to have health insurance or pay a penalty if they do not. Individuals are also required to enroll in a medical plan that has minimum essential coverage. MAA offers a medical plan that provides minimum essential coverage. Government medical plans (such as Medicare and Medicaid) available through the Affordable Care Act’s Marketplace or qualified individual medical insurance plans are other examples that meet this requirement. The fee levied by the IRS that an individual must pay for not having health insurance in 2017 is either $695 per adult and $347.50 per child under age 18 (up to $2,085 for a family) or 2.5% of the individual’s household income above the tax return filing threshold for his or her filing status—whichever is greater. For more information, go to obamacarefacts.com/Obamacare-individual-mandate/ As of January 1, 2015, a new federal mandate through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires employers with 50 or more employees to offer medical coverage to all employees who work an average of 30 hours per week for a period of 12 months. This is referred to as employer mandate, and it applies to MAA.

The Benefits Department will monitor associates’ hours for eligibility. Associates meeting eligibility will be notified by the Benefits Department of their eligibility and the 30-day enrollment period. Associates’ coverage will be in effect for 12 months regardless of a reduction in hours or change in status.

Important Form 1095-C Information: As you may already know, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires MAA to provide a Form 1095-C to all benefit eligible associates. This form confirms that MAA offered you and your eligible dependents affordable medical coverage. One requirement of this document is to include Social Security Numbers (SSNs) so that the IRS can tie the information back to tax records. Please ensure during enrollment that all SSNs, dates of birth and legal names for yourself and your covered dependents are entered correctly.
