Your Patio Is Calling

After months of planning errands around triple- digit temperatures, October brings one of the most welcome changes of the year to Sun City: the return of outdoor season. Cooler mornings and increasingly comfortable evenings make it easier to trade air conditioning for walking shoes, golf clubs, bicycles and patio chairs. For residents who spent much of the summer limiting outdoor activity to the earliest hours of the day, fall can feel like getting part of the community back. Golf is an obvious place to start. Sun City’s courses become considerably more inviting as temperatures retreat, giving residents more opportunities to play without racing the afternoon heat. The same goes for walking and cycling. Neighborhood streets and paths offer opportunities to get moving, while nearby parks and recreation areas can provide a change of scenery. October is also a good time to gradually rebuild an outdoor exercise routine that may have slowed during summer. For gardeners, fall brings another reason to head outside. Arizona’s cooler season allows residents to refresh containers, tend landscaping and plant varieties

suited to the months ahead. Even simple projects can make patios and yards more enjoyable as outdoor entertaining returns. Residents willing to venture beyond Sun City have even more choices. West Valley trails and desert recreation areas become increasingly appealing as temperatures moderate, opening the door to hiking, birdwatching and picnics. Closer to home, sometimes the best fall activity requires no itinerary at all. Morning coffee on the patio, an evening walk with a neighbor or dinner outdoors can feel like luxuries after another intense Arizona summer. Some caution is still warranted. October can produce surprisingly hot afternoons, and residents should continue carrying water, using sun protection and choosing activities appropriate for their fitness level. But the seasonal shift has finally begun. In Sun City, fall isn’t about watching leaves change color. It’s about watching sidewalks, golf courses, patios and outdoor gathering spaces come alive again — and remembering why so many residents look forward to this time of year.
