Never Forget This September marks 25 years since a clear Tuesday morning changed America forever. On September 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 people lost their lives in terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Virginia and aboard Flight 93, which crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
That makes the 25th anniversary especially meaningful. Across Arizona, our communities are home to veterans, military families, firefighters, law
enforcement officers, healthcare professionals and others whose lives and careers were shaped by the events of that day. Luke Air Force Base and Arizona’s strong military community provide an everyday reminder of the men and women who have served our country in the years since. Yet September 11 is also remembered for what happened afterward. Neighbors checked on neighbors. Strangers helped strangers. First responders rushed toward danger while others fled. Communities gathered to donate blood, raise flags, light candles and offer support. For a moment, differences seemed smaller and our shared humanity became more important. We can honor September 11 by remembering the victims and their families, thanking those who serve, teaching younger generations what happened and finding ways to strengthen the communities we call home. Attend a local remembrance. Fly the American flag. Thank a first responder. Help a neighbor. Small acts cannot change the past, but they can help preserve one of September 11’s most enduring lessons: even during our darkest moments, compassion, courage and unity can bring us together. We remember. We honor. We will never forget.
A quarter-century later, September 11 remains a day to remember those who were lost, honor those who answered the call and reflect on the extraordinary courage shown by ordinary Americans. For those old enough to remember, the images and emotions of that morning remain vivid. Many can recall exactly where they were when they first heard the news. For younger generations, however, September 11 is history—an event they know through classrooms, family stories, photographs and annual remembrances.
