One of the quiet privileges of living in the West Valley is what happens to the sky most evenings from September through November. The monsoon moisture is fading, the heat is loosening its grip, and the sunsets — unobstructed by mountains to the west and painted by thin desert air — are genuinely world-class. Here are five spots worth making a trip to before the season slips away.

Perched near the confluence of the Gila and Salt rivers, Estrella’s hilltop saddles deliver sweeping views of Goodyear and the broader valley floor at dusk. The Baseline Loop is the easiest entry point. Bring a flashlight for the walk back.
Skyline Regional Park, Buckeye. The Watson Overlook trail here is short, accessible, and drops you at a vantage point with views of the Sierra Estrella range to the south and open desert in every direction. Free entry. Stroller and wheelchair accessible trails available for those who want a flatter experience. Thunderbird Conservation Park, Glendale. Tucked into the northern edge of the city, the Arrowhead
White Tank Mountain Regional Park, Waddell. The largest
regional park in Maricopa County at nearly 30,000 acres, White Tank offers multiple trails that put you up in the hills with panoramic western views right as the light goes golden. The Waterfall Trail is manageable for most fitness levels, and the drive in alone — with
Point Loop rewards the modest climb with solid valley views and reliably beautiful light at sunset, particularly in the fall when the angle drops low and warm. The Wigwam Resort Grounds, Litchfield Park. For something less strenuous, the open green space and mature trees at the historic Wigwam create a peaceful, almost cinematic frame for the evening sky — without needing hiking boots. The West Valley sky puts on a show every night. All you have to do is show up.
