August is also a good time to remember that not everyone is looking forward to the start of school. For some families, this season brings financial stress, schedule changes, or uncertainty. A simple act of kindness, whether it’s offering encouragement, lending a helping hand, or simply checking in on a neighbor, can make a bigger difference than we often realize. From all of us at The Front Porch Magazine, we wish our students, teachers, school staff, homeschool families, and parents a wonderful start to the new school year. Here’s to new opportunities, new friendships, and making the most of the season ahead. After all, in the words of Laura Ingalls Wilder, “Home is the nicest word there is.”
There’s something about August that feels like a fresh start. While January gets all the attention for new beginnings, August quietly brings its own season of change. Backpacks come out of the closets, alarm clocks are reset, lunch boxes reappear, and families begin settling back into familiar routines after a summer of vacations, late nights, and pool days. Whether you’re sending a kindergartener off for their very first day of school, watching a high school senior begin their final year, helping a college student move into a dorm, homeschooling your children, or simply enjoying a quieter neighborhood during the school day, this time of year reminds us how quickly the seasons of life pass. As our routines change, it’s also a great reminder to slow down and reconnect with our community. One of the things that makes Marley Park so special is that it truly feels like a neighborhood. We wave to each other on morning walks, gather at community events, chat while the kids play at the parks, and celebrate life’s milestones together. Those small moments are what turn neighbors into friends.
