Modern off the shelf infrared cameras are so small and light that they can be gimbal-mounted under a drone, which will easily carry them as payload. Their infrared sensors operate quickly and reliably in sub-zero environments while capturing overlapping high-resolution thermal images, making them ideal for mapping large areas. During the same period, commercial drones have undergone a most remarkable technological development. They now have motors with high power/weight ratio and batteries with properties that - in terms of size, weight and electric capacity - seemed impossible only 10 years ago. This makes modern

commercial multirotor drones capable of flying 20-25 minutes carrying an infrared camera that captures several high-resolution radiometric thermal images per second. The images are stored as files in an on-board computer, but are also transmitted real-time to a monitoring screen carried by the drone operator. Typically, the drone will fly at an altitude of 80-100 metres, with a speed of approx. 8 m/s. In addition to advancements within drone hardware, the navigational capabilities have also undergone a significant development. Using GPS technology and tailor-made software, it is now possible to plan even very complicated flight-routes in advance, and to make the drone follow the pre-planned flight-route with great precision. This makes it possible to fly drones safely in complex environments, like city centres. Just as importantly, it also makes it possible for the integrated drone-camera-navigation system to automatically attach a precise position – as geographic coordinates – to each thermal image. Thus, the drone flight can be planned meticulously in advance, preferably in collaboration with the district heating operator and city authorities. The drone flight can be safely and almost automatically executed, and all products, the thermal images, are precisely geo-referenced.
