A current project that Linka is working on is a 4.5 MW straw-fired plant for Mørke Distriet Heating, near Aarhus. To be completed by October this year, the plant will be able to supply heating to 600 customers in the area. The heating supply has previously been provided by a plant fired by wood pellets. The transition to the new plant will lead to savings in both fuel and operational costs for the district heating company, as well as a reduction in CO2 emissions by 909 tonnes in the coming 20 years. In addition, Linka recently signed a new project for an 8 MW straw-fired plant for Ryomgård District Heating, emphasizing the company's position as a leading supplier of medium sized heating plants. The existing 4.5 MW boiler was installed by Linka back in 1989, but due to an increasing number of customers its maximum capacity has been reached. The new boiler plant will be commissioned by the end of 2018.
West Jutland is guilty as charged for being the birth bed of yet another successful industrial technology company. In its early start-up phase, Linka Energy produced farm machinery, but quickly changed its focus to developing biomass energy plants. Founded in 1978, this year the company can celebrate its 40th jubilee supported by loyal customers and a steady growth pattem. PATENTED COMBUSTION TECHNOLOGY The biomass plants developed by Linka are designed with a patented combustion technology, ensuring high efficiency and maximum utilisation of the fuel. The boilers can be fired both by traditional biofuels such as straw, wood chips and wood pellets, and more exotic fuels, such as coffee shells. This flexibility in fuel types enables for targeting a larger customer base by tailoring the plants according to their specific needs. CEO Brian Pedersen emphasizes that one of the reasons behind the success of their products is the staff's solid technical knowledge: "We have some highly qualified people with us which makes it possible for us to offer a wide range of products to our customers. Our patented technology is supported by a team of 45 people who know what they are doing, and therefore we can work on many projects at a time". One of these projects has been to deliver a total of five wood chip plants for the Norwegian Defence Estate Agency (NDEA) since 2013, with the latest commissioning taking place in March 2017. Varying between 2.5 MW-4.3 MW, these biomass plants were installed on various military bases in the Northern part of Norway. Two of the plants provide heating through boilers installed inside the buildings, while the other three are containerised energy plants. The containers are shipped and hoisted onto a prepared concrete foundation, and therefore this type of pre-fabricated mobile solution allows for more flexibility according to the customer's physical surroundings. For NDEA, the turnkey heating plant was delivered with a primary biomass boiler and a backup oil boiler built in one container, while the wood chip storage has been placed in a sunken separate container.
With success both at home and abroad, Linka has been awarded as one of Denmark's fastest growing companies five times in a row, the last time being just last year. It is clear that 2017 has meant a great deal for Linka: besides the recognition from the Danish business community, the company presented a financial statement that pointed at impeccable results and performance; and it was also the year when the company received investment funds from Via Equity, which now owns 60% of the company's shares. "With Via Equity's network and expertise, we will be able to target markets and customer segments we didn't have access to before. The partnership is purely strategic, meaning that they do not interfere in our day-by-day operations. Considering the goals we have set for the company for the near future, this investment has certainly not made things worse for us", Brian Pedersen explains.
