ing of humanity and deity. This is a direct quotation from this passage in Isaiah 7:14. This name is used just a few times in the Old Testament in addition to the one just mentioned. Call the name” is a Hebrew idiom. This doesn’t mean just wearing a name by which others know and call us, dif ferentiating one person from another. Actually this conveys the characteris tics, attributes, all that embodies His person, His authority, arid all of His power. What the Scripture means is that He will be worthy of this name and will in Himself be all it means, “God with us.” Matthew begins this way and concludes with, “Lo, I am with you alway.” Q . Phoenix, Arizona — “You’ll forgive me for asking what may be an obvious question, but I’ve always been con fused in that Genesis 3:15 is supposed ly the first promise of the Saviour in the Word of God. This is difficult for me to understand.” A. The verse reads, “I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and be tween thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” It is particularly significant that the Word says “her seed.” The rest of the Old Testament refers to the fa ther-son relationship. There is no men tion of any human father here. It is the head wherein is the source of life. Damage to the head of any animal or person may result in death. The heel can be crushed and there will be no fatal results. Satan may have thought he got temporary victory over the Lord Jesus Christ on Calvary’s cross. In the providence of God, however, it was nec essary for the Saviour to go to the cross in order that He might redeem the world. This was, of course, a vic tory for the Lord Jesus Christ over sin and over all of the powers of Satan. Q , San Francisco, Calif. — “Is there any passage of Scripture in the Old Testa ment where the genealogy of Mary, the mother of Jesus, can be traced back to David?"

Management committee of Biola’s Arizona Bible Institute from left to right: Mr. Merv Fishback, director of Public Relations; Mr. Arthur Menzemer , business manager; and Mr. Paul Eymann, dean. A. No, the Old Testament genealogies were normally traced back to the fa ther and Mary’s is not given. The rea son we know that the genealogy of Mary is given in Luke is by comparing the father of Joseph. Joseph, the hus band of Mary, was not the son of Heli. In Matthew’s gospel he is the son of Jacob. Q . Fresno, California — “Why don’t Mark and John give ari ancestry of Christ? Why is there no record of His nativity in these portions? Was it be cause the writers were born after the Lord Jesus?” A. One of the marvelous things about the Word of God is the wonderful har- mony of the four Gospels. There are things in some of the Gospels which do not appear in others. A good ex planation is made by John when he declares, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, “But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believ ing ye might have life through his name” (John 20:31). Each of the Gospels have a specific objective. Each man was under the di rection of the Spirit of God. The pur pose of Matthew is to describe the his tory of the “King of the Jews.” He pre sents evidence proving that Jesus of Nazareth is veritably the fulfillment of all the Messianic prophecies of the Old Testament. Mark presents the story (continued on next page) 25
