THE QUADRANGLE Reunion reports

25 Years On – 1st XV Reunion

50 Years On – 1st XV Reunion

The College vs Christchurch Boys’ High School match 2018 brought together an entertaining group of 11 team members, 10 years on from our last gathering. We were accompanied over the two days by eight of the CBHS team who won the match in 1968. They continued to be modest in victory, as we continued to appear gracious in defeat. It was a special time, with lots of laughs, stories remembered, and mimics of former masters’ gestures and speech. We all look pretty good in general for 50 years on, but sadly we have lost one of our team, Derek Hart (7686). CBHS has lost six of their team. The festivities began the night before the big game at No 4 Mansfield Avenue for drinks. On game day we were welcomed in Jacobs House by Executive Principal Garth Wynne, posed for a team photo, lunched in the Dining Hall and toured College. The match was reminiscent of our year – a loss, but we can be proud the team played with spirit, and on occasions displayed enough ability to win, but sadly never quite got there. Following the match, we adjourned to Fat Eddie’s as guests of the Old Boys’ Association, before both teams met up again at Craft Embassy for dinner. We drank a large toast to absent team members and those who have gone on ahead, including coaches Ian Botting and John Graham. We can still see Ian in his All Blacks socks and English player jersey, and John, who it had been said when Grumpy McPhail (All Blacks selector) replied to a comment made by John, “I have come to hear you play John Graham”. A wonderful and memorable two days spent together. We thank Justine Nicholl for organising such a successful programme. When you catch up with guys you haven't seen for years and it only feels like yesterday you know you're in for a good couple of days and nights! Attitudes and personalities remain the same even if some of us have less hair, with the exception of Pete Handyside, who still sports his trademark high country hair! We gathered the night before the game at No 4 Bar to reminisce about the glory days and catch up on what all the lads have been up to. On game day the team enjoyed a cuppa with Executive Principal Garth Wynne and a tour of the schoolm, with Ian Bolton observing lots of changes. Hard luck to this years’ team who were in the fight, but had the game get away from them in the second half. Great to be at the Old Boys’ function and catch up with the other reunion teams. Unfortunately, our coach John Mills was unable to attend. The team enjoyed a meal and drinks that night and were joined by the ageless legend that is BDL. As you can imagine, many a story was told, and the word "freeze" may have been used! Thanks to Justine at the CCOBA for organising the events. Great work from the lads who made the journey!
