College – Issue 35

“Those guys taught me the etiquette and the expectations, and the tricks of the trade – I was very lucky they were being so supportive, and lucky, too, to get to know so many new people and make some great friends.” So keen was Dominic to make the role his own, that he didn’t watch the film West Side Story until about three weeks before opening night. “I didn’t want to have any preconceptions about the role but to play it my own way as directed.” And while he has no special role models, he said at the end of his scenes he always thought of Old Boy Henry Rolleston who had taken lead roles in several College productions in recent years.

“I remembered how much I’d looked up to guys like him, filling roles like this, and wondered how he would have done it. It was a weird feeling going from admiring these people to being put in the place where you carry the torch and be the best you can. “There’s a huge expectation on College productions – they’re known to be amazing and have such a reputation.” To anyone considering being in a College musical, Dominic has some simple advice. “Give it a go! I was nowhere near expecting to get the role of Tony, and who knows how lucky you can be.”
