College – Issue 35

“The fight scenes were great. They had to look spontaneous, and I think they looked convincing.” A bond formed among the boys in the Jets – who ranged from Year 11 to Year 13 – and who all worked well together and became good friends. “Working as the leader of the gang also let me help out all the others, and so I understood the context a wee bit more, which also allowed me to connect better with Riff. Everyone in the Jets had a different personality – some were angry, some were crazy and some were chilled out. It was fantastic working with them all. I feel I’ve made strong friendships for life. It was truly an unforgettable experience – and it’s made my year.”

“Working with them was fantastic. They’re both trained and accomplished singers – I’ve never had a singing lesson in my life, but I know when I’m wrong, and I can identify when I’m right. “Every song in West Side Story had so much of a story to it, and each one moved the action on. ‘Cool’ was my favourite, a chance to try and calm the boys down!” Singing along with an orchestra was another amazing experience, says Angus. An accomplished musician who played guitar for Our House in 2016, took part in last year’s production Singin’ in the Rain , and is vocalist and lead guitar for Run77, Angus relished the whole package presented by West Side Story . The fight scenes were energetic and exciting and, with professional choreography, the moves were plotted within the bounds of health and safety, but still with plenty of raw emotion, he says

“It was truly an unforgettable experience – and it’s made my year.” Angus Mossman

Enter the Rangi dancers, who astounded the College contingent with their fitness and professionalism. “We quickly realised they were a lot fitter than we were. When they came off stage after a routine they were hardly gasping, whereas we were wiped out. I was lucky to have such a good dance partner as Ella Stephens who helped me along the way.” Angus also acknowledges the help of leads Dominic Edmond and Holly Evans who played Tony and Maria.
