JUNIE AND ANGAD GO TO HARVARD College joins the Harvard Research Project
Junie Wee and Angad Vraich went to Cambridge, Massachussetts in June – just a week-long stay at the “Ivy League” Harvard University, but enough to whet their appetite for Round Square International and research learning opportunities.
The Year 13 and Year 11 students were part of the Round Square International Student Research Symposium, the only New Zealanders among 24 young people from India, the USA, Colombia, Switzerland, Australia, Tanzania, Argentina and China. And although College has belonged to RSI for just two years, both the boys and International Student Manager Deanne Gath were delighted to discover College’s enactment of the Round Square IDEALS compares favourably with others who have been involved with the organisation for far longer. “We found we’re doing pretty well. A lot better than I thought we’d be,” says Head of International & Round Square Junie Wee. “It was really interesting to see what other schools were doing, and I think we’re doing things at a more advanced level than many others were. We want to keep moving in the right direction, and so this year we’ll try to initiate connections with other global member schools through such things as online penpals and hopefully develop that into Skype pals.” Junie and Angad were at Harvard to take part in the Research Schools International and Harvard Graduate School of Education project looking at how educators support students’
development of international understanding and collect examples of best practice on good global competence education. The boys’ work began before they left College, interviewing their peers and taking with them the data produced. Then, in turn, the symposium students interviewed
each other, and were taught how to code the responses. “This meant that when we returned to College we would be able to conduct ongoing research, and be able to code it ourselves,” says Angad.
