College – Issue 35

by 84–64 to finish 15th. From the Senior A squad, both Nale Fifita and Will de Geest have been chosen to participate in the NZ U17 development camp in Term 4. Also during tournament week, the College Junior side (Year 9 and Year 10) competed in Nelson at the South Island championships. The team were top of their pool, with wins over OBHS, Middleton Grange and St Bede’s College. In the quarter-final, they defeated CBHS 77–61 to make top four. After a slow start in the semi-final, the team rallied late in the game, but it was not enough to avoid defeat to Shirley Boys’ High School by 5 points. In their last game, the team lost to a good Waimea College side to finish a very creditable 4th. The College U15 side had an up and down season. It started positively, but then, through injuries, the team lost a couple of close matches and found themselves in Division 2. In Term 3, with the team back to full strength, they were able produce some very convincing wins,

scoring over 100 points in three successive matches and were given the last quarter-final spot in the top division. The quarter-final was against 2nd seed Middleton Grange, and College managed to contain their key players for a convincing win. Next was CBHS and, in a game based on team confidence and great shooting, another win put College into the championship final. The final was played at Cowles stadium against top seed St Thomas of Canterbury College – a team that had comfortably defeated College earlier in the season. This game was different. College got out to a big early lead and had the opposition chasing the scoreboard all game. Tenacious defence and sound offense led the team to a 71–52 win, and a first ever title in the U15 grade for College. Congratulations to Jordan Braithwaite who was MVP for the final, and to the team on a great playoff run this term. Friday night basketball continues to grow, with College having nine teams competing along with three

Saturday teams (U15, U17 and U20 sides). The Senior B side had a great run during the season and narrowly lost their final in Division 1, while the 11A and 10A sides both finished third in their grades.

Hockey This year’s 1st XI achieved

something that does not happen very often – they got to the Rankin Cup final for the second successive year. Term 3 saw the team hit their straps and, in the local competition, they went unbeaten in their pool, defeated Burnside High School in the semi-final, and faced St Andrew’s College in the final, with the match going to a penalty shootout – and StAC claiming the title. At Rankin Cup, the team was 2nd after pool play, having lost only one match to St Kentigern. In the round of 16, the team defeated Tauranga Boys’ High School, had a quarter-final win over Auckland Grammar School, and then a thrilling overtime win against King’s College in the semi-final.
