College – Issue 35

The National school cross country championships were held in Taupo in June, on a demanding course with steep hills and lots of undulations. College had a team of five competing. In the Senior event, Dion Houston finished 26th, while Sam Idiens came 22nd in the Junior boys, only 31 seconds off the winning time. Jasper Moss capped off a great season by winning the 2km CP AWD event. On the Sunday there was a regional team relay race. Sam Idiens competed in the Canterbury B Junior team which finished 9th, while Dion’s team placed 2nd in the Senior event. Cycling A small group of College cyclists have competed throughout winter in a variety of events. At the end of Term 2, the team travelled to Timaru for the South Island secondary school road and track championships. Over two days of competition, the boys competed in individual time trials, team time trials and a road race, with College

achieving three podium results. In the individual time trial, Jack Drage achieved a bronze in the U17 grade, while Michael Audeau finished 3rd in the U16 road race. The Senior team of Jono Stewart, Sean Swanson, Jack Drage and Blake McGuigan just missed out on a medal in the U20 team time trial when they finished 4th, but the U16 team were able to claim a bronze. The College U16 team were Michael Audeau, Fearghus Bratten and Will Simcock. During tournament week the cycling team travelled to Blenheim for the annual Southern Tour, which comprises four different events – a time trial, criterium race, road race and hill clime – over two days. Sean Swanson was a consistent performer in the U20 grade, finishing in the top 10 in all four events, with his best finish being 4th in the time trial. Michael Audeau and Fearghus Bratten were amongst the leaders in the U16 grade, with top 10 finishes for both riders in a number of the events. Michael was 4th in the time trial and 5th in the hill climb. In

the U17 grade, Jack Drage was 6th in the hill climb and 8th in the time trial. In the local CSS championships, the Litolff Cup is the team time trial race. College finished 3rd behind two very impressive CBHS teams, producing their fastest time ever, averaging over 43 km/hr for the 15km course. The final event for the season was the NZSS road championships held in Christchurch during the October school holidays. Skiing College skiers have had a busy season of racing, competing at both the Canterbury and South Island schools’ events. The CSS championships were held at Mt Hutt in August. College claimed the top two individual ski placings, as well as the College teams finishing first and third. Sam Hadley was the fastest individual skier and and Cameron Nicolson was 2nd in the individual competition. Both boys were also members of the winning ski team, along with Ollie Moginie and Nick Schneidemann. The SISS championships were held at Cardrona, Wanaka, with College skiers competing in both giant slalom and slope freestyle events. Five College skiers finished in the
