part of our industry to transform Europe’s DHC networks in the coming years in order to contribute to the pursuit of the EU’s (increasingly) ambitious climate targets. Stay tuned! Finally, in line with DHC’s fundamentally local nature, we are beginning to work much more closely with cities around Europe, helping ensure that they get access to the technical expertise that our industry has to offer and giving them a voice in Brussels so that they can secure more regulatory and financial support to help develop and/or modernise DHC for their communities. As I write this, the quality of the sunlight outside my window is changing from summer to early autumn and the European institutions on the other side of the park are just days away from coming back to life. We can’t wait to get started!

With this inmind, the emergingEUdiscussionon sector coupling (e.g. power-to-heat) is of the highest strategic importance for our industry. Positioning DHC as an enabling tool for a more integrated European energy system must be a top priority, not only because it is a genuinely useful contribution to Europe’s decarbonisation process but also because it gives our networks a much needed ‘European’ dimension which justifies EU level efforts to take a greater interest in our sector. An additional, (and somewhat ironic) ‘problem’ is DHC’s status as a long-established technology. It is true that at their worst, DHC networks are coal-based, inefficient and generally incompatible with the transition to a sustainable energy system. It is our job as an industry to make this vision a thing of the past. Today, our networks can be as clean, green and efficient as we want them to be. The only non-negotiables are pipes and water. The rest is up to us. That’s why we’re planning to announce, at an event in Brussels on October 1st of this year, an ambitious, even radical, commitment on the
