A Game-Changer for Players’ Rights and Earnings NIL IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) in College Football — What Does It Mean? Down South, college football is not just a game — it’s a cultural event. Your team forms part of your identity. Rivalries extend beyond the field — it’s personal. In 1980, I got introduced to my daddy’s alma mater’s team, the Georgia Bulldogs and the greatest tailback ever, Herschel Walker. You do not get over that, and I don’t want to. A lot’s changed since the 1980s. The biggest is the advent of players’ name image and likeness [NIL] rights, which transformed the game forever, so I figured it was time to see what NIL is. Here’s what I found out in a nutshell: What Are NIL Rights? Players Getting a Cut of Their Success NIL rights allow players to get paid for things like signing autographs and appearing in commercials or endorsements. Before NIL, players couldn’t make money from their work, even though schools raked in millions from it. Ever noticed how many schools sell jerseys of famous players’ numbers without names on ‘em? It’s so they don’t have to pay the player who made the jersey sellable. That may be the symbol of how things have changed. So, How Do NIL Deals Work? The school isn’t paying, so the player isn’t a professional. The money comes from private people or businesses.

But there are some rules. Players follow guidelines set by the NCAA and their schools. Some states passed laws regulating NIL. South Carolina forbids promotion of “sin items” like tobacco, alcohol, and gambling. What Does This Mean for Schools? Schools benefit because NIL deals can attract top talent. And there’s an educational aspect. Schools can help players understand and manage deals. Some schools even have special programs to educate players about business and how to handle contracts. Why Is NIL Good Overall? In my opinion, it’s leveled the playing field between players and schools. It always seemed wrong to me that schools got millions off the backs of players who got nothing, some of whom came from abject poverty. It sickened me when Todd Gurley, another highly talented Georgia tailback, got suspended for signing autographs to fix his mother’s trailer that had a hole in the roof. Everybody’s Got a Choice to Make I know not everybody likes NIL. But this freight train has left the station, and schools can either get on it or get under it since nobody’s gonna stop it. Still, I agree the program might need some limits. I’ll let somebody else figure that out ‘cause I’m just ready to watch the Dawgs hunker down.

HOME SWEET-SMELLING HOME

DIY Home Scent Solutions That Work

None of us wants to be known as someone with a stinky house. While we may become nose blind to the smell of our homes, anyone visiting will notice whether your house smells fresh or rotten from the moment they step through the door. While sprayable air fresheners and candles can improve the smell, these scents fade quickly. Plus, having to replenish your supply can get expensive. Thankfully, three quick tricks will easily refresh the scent of your home. The Smell of Fresh-Baked Cookies Have you ever gone house hunting and noticed that many homes you tour smell like freshly baked cookies? Realtors often use this strategy to make the home feel more welcoming to potential buyers, and you can use the same trick to improve the smell of your house. Take a tablespoon or two of vanilla extract and place it in an oven-safe bowl or container. Bake it in the oven at 300 degrees for 10–20 minutes or until you notice the smell wafting through your house. Trash Can Freshener The trash cans in our kitchens are often the source of the biggest stink in our house. It’s a great habit to replace your trash bag whenever you add something that will rot or smell bad, but if the can holder retains odors, you don’t need to buy a new trashcan. Instead, dab cotton balls with your favorite essential oil and place them in the bottom of

your can. Changing out the cotton balls every time you replace a trash bag will help offset any bad trashcan scents.

Shaving Cream’s Unique Use The bathroom floor is often one of the dirtiest areas in our homes, especially around the toilet. While you can get on your hands and knees to scrub away grime, there’s an easier way to clean the area and provide a refreshing new scent. All you have to do is mop the floor using shaving cream. It’s less messy than traditional mopping and will leave your bathroom smelling clean!

Winning Against the Odds

Gerald’s Success in Securing the Medical Treatment He Deserved

One particular case with our client, Gerald, shows the consequences of a South Carolina workers’ compensation insurance company’s prolonged resistance to providing necessary medical care and how our commitment to him ultimately led to a favorable outcome. One day, while assisting a coworker in moving two large, heavy trash cans up a flight of stairs using a hand truck, Gerald’s right knee slammed into the steps due to an unexpected yank from his coworker. This injury left him with severe knee pain, particularly when squatting, kneeling, twisting, or turning. For months, Gerald followed the treatment plans the workers’ compensation doctors prescribed. However, despite his efforts, his knee showed no signs of improvement. The insurance company’s doctors refused to recommend surgery, even though all other treatments had failed. To make matters worse, the defense questioned Gerald’s

character and accused him of faking the severity of his injury.

medical history, which demonstrated that nothing else had worked, the insurance company finally agreed to cover the surgery and related treatments. We made sure the insurance company paid every penny of Gerald’s medical bills. Once Gerald completed his treatment, we negotiated a settlement close to our original offer. Our determination to fight for what was right ultimately overcame the insurance company’s initial refusals. Although the settlement wasn’t enormous, we took pride in standing up for Gerald and securing the medical care and compensation he deserved.

Desperate for relief, Gerald took matters into his own hands. Using his personal health insurance, he sought an independent opinion from a local orthopedist. An MRI revealed tears in both the lateral and medial meniscus of his knee. The orthopedist determined that surgery was necessary. We presented this compelling evidence to the insurance company, even offering a cash settlement that would allow Gerald to cover the cost of the surgery and potentially save the insurance company money. They still refused. Undeterred, we prepared for a contested hearing. During the deposition, the independent orthopedist finally reached his limit when repeatedly questioned about his decision to recommend surgery. Faced with this convincing testimony and our comprehensive presentation of Gerald’s

The Belgian Malinois Who Protected America

If you no longer want to receive this newsletter, call Pam at 864.582.0416 or email Rob@bhollandlawfirm.com . A TAIL OF COURAGE K-9 Sonya’s Distinguished Service Is Recognized

A national hero from the U.S. Coast Guard had a lot to wag her tail about this year! K-9 Sonya, an 11-year-old Belgian Malinois, was honored with the Animals in War & Peace Distinguished Service Medal this March for her extraordinary heroism over the past nine years. The hardworking dog has a long list of achievements and continues to serve the Coast Guard proudly. Sonya was one of 18 explosive detection canines in the Coast Guard, assigned to two duty stations, the Maritime Safety and Security Team in Seattle and the Maritime Security Response Team West in San Diego. Alongside her human partner, Sonya’s primary job was to detect and detract acts of terrorism in the U.S. She has performed more than 5,000 hours of explosives detection work and more than 8,500 vehicle sweeps.

The pooch’s expertise has helped other local law enforcement agencies handle bomb threats in residential and federal buildings, and she has worked with the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. One of the highlights of her career was when she found a firearm that was ditched during a high-speed pursuit that was later linked to multiple homicides. Her work ultimately helped to identify the suspect. Sonya has also had the opportunity to attend major events in the country, protecting guests and fans. Over her career, she worked security for four Super Bowls, the Rose Bowl, the U.S. Track and Field Olympics, U.S. World Athletics, PGA tournaments, and many other mass public gatherings. Sonya has assisted in security for four U.S. presidents, high-ranking dignitaries, and world leaders.

Sonya retired in 2023 and was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of cancer, but she didn’t let it stop her from continuing to serve. Sonya worked as the Coast Guard’s first-ever canine recruiter until her passing in April. In a heartfelt message online, Sonya’s handler, Chief Petty Officer James Grant, paid tribute to his partner. “Sonya girl, you were a fighter until the end,” he wrote. “Your loyalty and love will be forever remembered. K9 Sonya, you were the greatest, most loving dog I have ever met.”

Sonya’s brave legacy lives on and continues to inspire.
