HOT|COOL NO. 4/2018 - "Emerging District Heating Markets"

P21

The first large-scale DH schemes are being planned by Dublin City and South Dublin municipalities, supported by Codema – Dublin’s Energy Agency. The South Dublin DH Scheme, which is supported by the Interreg North-West Europe project HeatNet, will recycle waste heat from a data centre through a large-scale heat pump to supply heat to public sector buildings, a college campus and new residential and commercial developments. This scheme has already gone out to tender and is due to be operational in 2020. The Dublin City DH Scheme will utilise waste heat from a Waste to Energy plant in the docklands area of the city, which has up to 90MW of heat capacity, to feed nearby new and existing developments.

The new South Dublin County Council District Heating scheme planned for Tallaght will recycle waste heat from a large data centre to feed nearby public and private sector customers.

This scheme is planned to progress to procurement stage in the coming year and is currently seeking market soundings on the best approach to progress the project. IrDEA is the first association to represent the District Energy sector in Ireland and launched this year. Already IrDEA has 13 members, representing the public, private and academic sectors. It is committed to supporting the growth of the district energy sector in Ireland and the promotion of district energy as an economically viable and environmentally sound alternative to fossil fuel-based heating such as oil and gas. IrDEA will play a leading role in the areas of conference organisation and policy development on the island of Ireland.
