A SMALL RURAL COMPANY THAT IS BIG ON TASTE! APPLETON CHOCOLATES
by Lee Ann Atwater T he region around Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia was originally a transshipment point for goods bound for the Fortress of Louis- bourg. In the 19th century, like many other villages in the area, Tatamagouche had a sizable shipbuilding industry but in modern days the area is known for it’s amazing beaches and warm waters but thanks for Michael and Heather Foote it has become a hotspot for some of the sweetest treats that Nova Scotia has to offer. We sit down with this entrepreneur couple to talk about Nova Scotia’s sweetest hidden treasure and how the business has changed over the past five years and the challenges of a chocolatier from small town Nova Scotia. When we first spoke with Michael and Heather Foote, owners of and chocolatiers at Appleton Chocolates in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia, for the October 2016 issue we fell in love with this business and have made many day trips to the small town after a day at the beach to sample some of Nova Scotia’s sweetest treasures. We could not go with saying that Tatamagouche Brewery is also located in this small town so it is always a must stop for a pickup of some handmade and dipped craft chocolates by this husband-and-wife team and craft beer for the trip back to Halifax. But don’t think for a minute that you can’t enjoy some of these amazing hand dipped treats because of restrictions of coming into Nova Scotia brought on by the recent pandemic. Appleton Chocolates has customers from coast to coast in Canada and the United States and as far away as Europe, with customers having the ability to place orders through their easy to navigate website.
“We’ve got a customer in Dubai who every single year calls and orders for their family in Ontario and the family in Ontario does exactly the same. We have a lot of customers who fell in love with our chocolates while living here or were here visiting. We also have a lot of customers who shop online for quality maple and berry chocolates. Either way, they’re people looking for a taste of Nova Scotia,” said Michael.
