Tony's Open Chain's 3 levels of traceability
Traceability is about gathering the facts that enable us to create a transparent supply chain. Why is it important? Knowing the farmers we source cocoa from enables us to engage in direct relationships and take responsibility for our supply chain. Knowing their social and environmental conditions empowers us to drive meaningful change by defining and implementing the right interventions.
The BeanTracker journey begins!
Delivered fully traceable
Partner cooperatives
Cocoa is weighed, registered using the farmers ID and entered into BeanTracker
Tony's Open Chain cocoa beans are traceable all the way to the door of the processor, from there we offer two types of processing:
Weighed and logged in BeanTracker again then shipped to Europe and North America
Let's get started!
Farmer/delége delivers cocoa to partner cooperative/warehouse
Bean to Brand: Made with 100% traceable beans - from bean to branded product
Bean to Machine: Mixed with other beans during processing, but with the same impact on farmers (Read more here )
Farms GPS-polygon-mapped Assessed for deforestation and overlap with protected areas
Household visits throughout the year and follow up on child labour cases
1. ENVIRONMENTAL TRACEABILITY We monitor the environmental impact (deforestation, land use and biodiversity) and productivity (yield) of the farms of Tony’s Open Chain farmers. 100% of farms in our supply chain are GPS-polygon- mapped and assessed against protected areas and for deforestation risk.
2. SOCIAL TRACEABILITY We monitor the social conditions under which cocoa is produced (both of individual households and the community). The Child Labour Monitoring and Remediation System (CLMRS) provides a means of identifying cases of child labour, providing support and tracking follow-up visits, with the goal of aligning with national systems to achieve a comprehensive approach to child protection in cocoa-growing areas. Our human rights approach also includes robust mechanisms for preventing forced labour, addressing grievances and providing mediation where necessary.
3. OPERATIONAL TRACEABILITY We monitor which farmers and partner cooperatives deliver our beans, maintaining full transparency across our supply chain through a robust traceability system that tracks cocoa beans from the farmer to the door of the cocoa processor. Using our proprietary software, BeanTracker, we monitor bean origins, yield quantities, and movements through supply chain actors— from the farms, through to warehouses, lorry loading and shipping. This enables us to know exactly where, when, how and by whom the beans were harvested, ensuring visibility throughout Tony’s Open Chain’s supply chain.
