Tony's Open Chain Impact Report 2024/25

Monitoring resilience We have historically assessed aspects of resilience using the Multi-Dimensional Poverty Index (MPI), incorporating the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale and customised questions on assets and financial status. Over five years, survey results show a marked improvement in household resilience. In Côte d’Ivoire, the percentage of households classified as severely food insecure fell from 32% in 2022 to 22% in 2023. Households in Côte d’Ivoire also saw a steady increase in basic asset ownership, rising from an average of 3.3 assets in 2019 to 3.9 in 2023. The proportion of cocoa farmers with a bank account increased in both countries – rising from 44% to 58% in Ghana and from 14% to 25% in Côte d’Ivoire between 2019 and 2023. Additionally, there were consistent decreases in the percentage of farmers classified as deprived in sanitation, water access, and housing indicators. Now that the MPI survey has closed, we are committed to exploring new approaches to monitoring and learning about farmer resilience, including through periodic farmer engagement and surveys. Infrastructure interventions Creating an enabling environment for farming families is essential and requires targeted, needs-based investments in community infrastructure such as water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and education and healthcare. Improved access to healthcare and water services reduces household out-of-pocket costs, while access to education expands opportunities for children of cocoa farmers. Beyond advancing farming practices, systemic support through robust infrastructure is crucial for the long-term sustainability and prosperity of cocoa-farming communities. We partner with a wide range of funding and implementing organisations, including the Chocolonely Foundation (funded through 1% of Tony’s Chocolonely’s annual revenue), DEG, Initiative for Sustainable Trade (IDH), Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (RVO), and Elucid, amongst others, to support the building of this infrastructure, which you can read more about here .
