Tony's Open Chain Impact Report 2024/25

Remediation Together with partner cooperatives, we have started remediation activities for both confirmed cases of deforestation. 1. Whenever a suspected case of deforestation is confirmed via our ground-truthing process, Tony’s Open Chain engages with the farmer to develop a remediation plan to restore the deforested area. 2. Once all parties agree to a course of action, Tony’s Open Chain makes a decision on the level of support to be provided to the farmer and monitors the progress of the area over time. Tony’s Open Chain seeks to carry out remediation activities within 6 months of identifying the case of deforestation, provided the farmer agrees to participate. Depending on the farm’s specific needs, remediation can include reforestation, tree regeneration efforts, mobilising community action for conservation initiatives or the implementation of sustainable agricultural practices (i.e., agroforestry). Remediation activities carried out in the 2024/25 season included the purchasing and planting of shade trees to enhance agroforestry systems, the distribution of fertilisers and phytosanitary inputs to protect crops, and the provision of cocoa tree nurseries for replanting efforts (including logistics support to enable safe transport of nurseries to farms).

Cases of confirmed deforestation

Case 1: Clear evidence of deforestation. To remediate this, the farmer is planning to plant timber trees and cocoa trees.

Case 2: Satellite imagery detected that deforestation took place on the land indicated by the red line. The farmer confirmed that he had cut down trees to enable construction in that area. This farmer was included in a community restoration scheme to plant shade trees and fruit trees on nearby community land.

They sent service providers to come and plant trees for me, including coconut. It will enable the cocoa to grow well and have shade, and enable me to get more beans, but I am pleading to them (the cooperatives) to bring me back. Female Ghanaian farmer
