Del Paso Country Club

1

Presidentially Speaking

I have had the privilege of visiting Del Paso Country Club since I was a small child. My grandfather Higgins loved the game of golf and loved Del Paso. I remember many visits to our club with him, I remember one day when he showed me his membership certificate he was so proud of, it’s one of those experiences you never forget. My parents loved Del Paso, for many years when I was a child it felt like our whole year revolved around the Magpie. Things were pretty relaxed around our house on Memorial Day weekend. I have many fond memories with family and friends at our club, but more importantly I’m making new ones every day. Serving as your President is something I never dreamed of being able to do, I’ve had a wonderful experience and would like to thank everyone for the opportunity. We have a wonderful group of people as members. We all aren’t perfect, but we generally get along and have a good time together. I had some trepidation when I began my term that there would be several challenging situations and difficult conversations. There were a couple, but what surprised me was the number of hugs I received. We really do have a great membership, and I am blessed with some close friends that have helped me immensely. If you have the time volunteer to serve on a committee, you will learn more about our club, make some new friends, and hopefully have a positive impact on its future. Our club has the benefit of a strong Board of Directors who have great insights into the operation of the club and know how to act in a decisive manner when needed. We have a number of members that have served on our various committees, some for many years who we should thank for their service. We have an energetic staff that are focused on providing a high level of service to our members. And we are all blessed by the efforts of Clint Luedtke and his team who never ceases to amaze all of us with how well our course is being maintained. Fix your ball marks! Not too long ago I was serving on the Finance Committee when in December 2019 the club had a sell list of 76 members, many of which had been waiting to sell for several years. I was worried about the future of the game of golf, “Would younger generations that grew up with video games and social media embrace it?”The Admissions Committee got a group together and did some brainstorming, the Board agreed to take a risk and lowered our initiation fee to a very competitive amount and created some new membership categories to stimulate applications. We were in the process of starting to reduce the sell list when covid hit in March 2020. We ended up with a large influx of new members and transitioned to a wait list. This rapid change in our membership demographic may be difficult for some members to adjust to, but our club is now well positioned to flourish as we move forward. One issue we have to deal with is complacency. Andy Grove used to tell a story about the crease in the carpet. You might have an area rug at home that has bunched up and instead of stopping and straightening it out, you train yourself to step over it. You get used to working around a situation that you should just fix, at least you do until you finally trip over it and stop and fix it. Sometimes we get used to the status quo – be it poor service, lack of housekeeping, weeds in the parking lot. Good leadership from our Board and Management requires dealing with the difficult issues and not kicking the can down the road. Whatever challenges that may occur can be turned into opportunities, as we did in 2019. I am confident and excited that our club will remain as the club of choice in Northern California. Thanks again for allowing me this opportunity to serve our club. This article was not written by ChatGPT. Who is John Gault?

Dave Higgins, Jr. President

Hello, Del Paso!

the meantime, Clubhouse Manager, Kellie Clark, has stepped into the Events Director role. We are also bidding a fond farewell to Floor Service Director Alex Nicoloudis and Office Manager Julie De Dios. They will be leaving Del Paso April 1 to move to Florida. We thank them both for the years of service at Del Paso and wish them nothing but success with their new adventures. We added a few new Club Events to our monthly Calendar beginning in January that have had a great response. PASTA NIGHT Our Pasta Nights on the 3rd Sunday of each month have been very well attended. Our February Pasta Night brought in over 160 Members for dinner! I have received extremely positive feedback about Members’ experience there and look forward to its growth and evolution in the upcoming months. KIDS NIGHT OUT Kids Night Out on the 1st Friday of each month continues to grow in attendance. It is a great opportunity for our youngest of Members to socialize, dine, watch movies, and meet other young Members. We also love seeing their parents enjoying some adult time in the lively Grill on Friday evenings. If you have not stopped by the Del Paso gym lately, I encourage you to do so. Laura Maxwell and her team reconfigured the existing equipment that resulted in much more space to utilize equipment and machines to their full potential. We have separated the equipment and now have a dedicated cardio room and a dedicated strength training room. This has created a much more efficient, open workout space. We also have the addition of the much-requested kettlebell station. We will look to continually enhance and replace equipment as necessary throughout the upcoming year. Our next big Member Event is our St. Patrick’s Day Pub Crawl on Friday, March 17. This will be a great evening with food, dancing, and green beer. I hope to see you there!

I write this after just having had the pleasure of walking the Golf Course with Mike Green, Clint Luedtke, and Kyle Phillips, addressing the state of the Course and the trees that were lost in the early January storms. The Board

has approved up to $60k to plant 50 new trees throughout the Golf Course prior to the agronomy closure in April. The potential placements of trees will be staked in the next few weeks by Kyle Phillips and his team. This will give us the opportunity to review and finalize placement prior to planting that will begin on Monday, March 20th. A big focal point and a lot of time spent with Kyle was on Hole 7, discussing options to address the large tree we lost that helped define the hole. At the time of this writing, there are a few options being discussed with Kyle and the Committees. A very viable option is to transplant a nearby Cork Oak (the same species that was lost), relocating it left of the 7th fairway which would immediately help reframe the hole. Clint has met with a tree contractor who has visited the site and quoted a 95% success rate. Some of their previous work includes relocating many trees at Pebble Beach. I’d like to thank Kyle Phillips and his team for the dedication and time spent caring for our Course. He truly has a love for Del Paso. Last month I talked about our new Standing Committee structure beginning in the new Fiscal Year. I have been very inspired and pleased with the amount of volunteer applications we received from our members looking forward to participating in our Governance practices and continue to improve our great Club. We extended the date to apply to March 12. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or are interested in being a part of a Committee. I wanted to fill you in on some staffing changes here at DPCC. At the end of February, our Events Director, Emily Stabbert, began her maternity leave. We are sending our best to the Stabbert family and look forward to having Emily return in the summer. In

Pace of Play in 2023 To assure that everyone has a pleasant and enjoyable time on the golf course, please be mindful of your pace of play. The Club’s General Rules ask that you maintain pace with the group ahead of you, and that your round be completed in a maximum of (4) hours and (15) minutes. Below are some helpful hints for improving pace of play: • Play it forward. Play tees that are most comfortable for you to reach greens in regulation. It is perfectly acceptable for players in the same group to play from different tees. • Minimize your time on the tee. On the tee it is usually acceptable to “hit when ready”. • Keep your pre-shot routine short. After club selection, strive to hit your shot within 20 seconds. • Be efficient on the putting green. Mark your ball, lift and clean it when you arrive at the green. You can usually line up your putt while others are putting, without disturbing them. • When reaching the green, position your clubs nearest the next tee. Wait until the next tee, to record your score. Violators to the Club’s pace of play policy will first receive a verbal warning from the professional staff. A second complaint will result in a letter of warning from the General Manager. A third violation will require attendance in front of the Board of Directors at their monthly meeting. Thank you for your courtesy and cooperation.

MARCH IS NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH BY LAURA MAXWELL, FITNESS DIRECTOR

MARCH COMPLEMENTARY PERFORMANCE WORKSHOP: Kettlebells: Proper Form and Exercises Wednesday, March 22 at 5:30 p.m.

Fuel for the future when planning meals and snacks. Food is the fuel that keeps your body running smoothly throughout your life, so give it the nutrients it needs to meet each life stage.

Join Malinda and Alice as they instruct you on correct form, grip, and safety while using kettlebells. You will focus on effective and safe exercises to increase full body strength. With kettlebells you can simultaneously develop power, build muscle, and lose body fat. This is an optimal combination for transforming your body composition. Compound movements are better for fat loss as they involve more musculature and thus burn more calories. Training with kettlebells can be an effective full body workout with the right combination of exercises. With a well-balanced kettlebell workout, you don’t need to be concerned about whether you’ve done enough work for one muscle or another, you’re sure to have covered them all.

Helpful eating tips during National Nutrition Month and all year long:

• Purchase foods with minimal packaging. Buy fruits and vegetables in season and shop locally when possible. • Plan your meals and snacks to stay nourished. Meal planning helps you to keep on target and minimize unhealthy snacking. • Eat a variety of foods from all food groups. Eat lean proteins, bright greens from crunchy vegetables or vibrant reds from tangy fruit, and whole grains to give you a healthy boost. • Make tasty foods at home with new ingredients and spices. Find creative ways to use leftovers instead of throwing them away. • Eat healthy - Look good, feel good.
