A statement from McEntee Law Group calling for accountability, transparency, and respect for the Constitution in federal immigration enforcement following recent incidents that put public safety at risk.
McEntee Law Group Pro-immigrant. Human focused.
Statement on Killings of Keith Porter, Renee Good, and Alex Pretti The Trump Administration has engaged in a sustained pattern of misleading the American public about the scope and purpose of its immigration enforcement actions. To be clear, the ICE operations carried out in Chicago, Minneapolis, and other Democratic-led cities were not focused on targeting serious criminal activity or improving public safety. From Minneapolis to Los Angeles, these operations have resulted in the loss of innocent life. The tragic events of the murder of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis are not isolated incidents. A few weeks earlier, on New Year’s Eve, Keith Porter Jr., was fatally shot by an off-duty ICE agent. These horrific events are the foreseeable result of reckless and escalating enforcement practices directed by this Administration. No individual or government agency is above the law, including those charged with immigration enforcement. The conditions that led to the chaos in Los Angeles and Minneapolis were created by policies that prioritized intimidation and cruelty over accountability and public safety. Deploying masked, unidentified, heavily armed ICE agents into communities, often targeting people of color and individuals perceived as foreign, is an inherently dangerous, racist tactic that places both residents and officers at risk. These actions undermine public trust and fracture the relationship between communities and the federal government that is meant to serve and protect them. The United States has faced similar moments in its history, including Reconstruction, Jim Crow, the suppression of the labor movement, the Civil Rights era, and the Vietnam War. In each of these periods, progress required the public to demand transparency, accountability, and adherence to constitutional principles. This moment is no different. Elected officials are sworn to uphold the Constitution and protect the rights and freedoms of all Americans, not only those who supported them politically. Words of sympathy are no longer sufficient. What is required now is action. We call for a full, independent investigation conducted with transparency and integrity . Given the Department of Homeland Security’s repeated failures under the current leadership, it cannot be relied upon to investigate itself. Meaningful, bipartisan congressional oversight is necessary, along with enforceable guardrails to ensure that such abuses of power are never repeated. Those responsible for unlawful acts must be held fully accountable through the judicial system . These steps are essential to restoring public trust and upholding the rule of law. This is not a partisan demand. If these actions had occurred under a Democratic administration, we would call for the same investigation, oversight, and accountability. Keith Porter, Renee Good, and Alex Pretti did not deserve to be killed by federal enforcement officers, nor to have their names and reputations publicly disparaged afterward. We stand in solidarity with their families, with the people of Minnesota, and with immigrant communities across the country who continue to be placed at risk by these practices. We urge the public to demand more from their elected officials : accountability, transparency, and compassion. To our clients at McEntee Law Group , regardless of the reckless conduct of this Administration, our commitment to you does not change. We will continue to defend your rights, stand with you, and fight for fairness and dignity without hesitation and without exception.
