First Breeding Season Guarantee All bulls selling for $4,000 or more will be covered 50% by Haynes Cattle Company, if they are injured during their first breeding season. Breeding season is defined as the 90-day period following the first turnout of the bulls. Fifty percent of the value of the injured animal, less salvage (buyer retains any salvage amount), will be given as credit in a following sale or towards a replacement bull, if a satisfactory one is available. All injured bulls must be diagnosed by a veterinarian. Please notify Haynes Cattle Co., as soon as possible, should injury occur and prior to the injured bull being sold for salvage. All claims should be made by September 1, 2026. Example 1: A $6,000 bull is injured and will not heal. A credit of $3,000 minus any salvage value will be given to the buyer. Example 2: A $4,000 bull is injured and will not heal. A credit of $2,000 minus any salvage value will be given to the buyer. Example 3: A $3,500 bull is injured and will not heal. No credit is given. Buyer retains all salvage value. This is not a mortality policy. Mortality coverage can be purchased sale day. While we don’t relish the thought of an injured bull, we do value and respect our customers. Historically, we’ve had a small percentage of our bulls with season-ending injuries. If you’re not happy, we’re not happy!

HAYNES BULL DEVELOPMENT As seedstock producers, we center our bull development around the future usefulness of the bull in your operation. Haynes bulls are developed without creep feed. This has two-fold reasoning. First, we can’t cull our registered herd like we do our commercial herds if the creep feed distorts the job our cows are doing. Secondly, with a strong focus for carcass in our herd, we don’t wish to distort or inflate that information. The bulls at Haynes Cattle Co. receive their first bite of grain after 205 days of age. Except for 10 to 14 days at weaning, these bulls spend their life in no less than 1/4 section pastures. Then, we balance a ration to minimize the starch factor, and yet grow the bulls well enough to express the genetic differences. Once the bulls are scanned for carcass in late January, the bulls are further developed to be seedstock on a conditioning ration until delivery by April 1. We value your opinion as a commercial producer using our bulls. Let us know how we are doing.

Without Dan Boyer and Buck Trusty, not much happens out here! ‘Anything I can do, they can do better!’ So MUCH thanks to them. Also, Lisa Meyer for her being so dependable with night-calving and anywhere else! Chance Skomp is a BIG part of this ‘sale experience’ and we don’t ever want to do it without him! We appreciate Dylan Kildahl and his helpers for the torching and clipping of these bulls. He’s our “torture” man! Thank you all.

AMERICAN ANGUS ASSOCIATION® SELECTION TOOLS
Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE. Accuracy (ACC), is the reliability that can be placed on the EPD. An accuracy of close to 1.0 indicates higher reliability. Accuracy is impacted by the number of progeny and ancestral records included in the analysis. Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning Weight (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG), feed efficiency expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for postweaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed. Yearling Weight (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearling Height (YH), is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling height, expressed in inches, compared to the that of other sires. Scrotal Circumference (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires. Docility (DOC), is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility in a sire’s offspring compared to another sire. MATERNAL Heifer Pregnancy (HP), is a selection tool to increase the probability or chance of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant as first-calf heifers during a normal breeding season. A higher EPD is the more favorable direction, and the EPD is reported in percentage units. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires. Maternal Milk (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic metrit for milk and mothering ability in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. Mature Weight (MW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the difference in mature weight of daughters of a sire compared to the daughters of other sires. Mature Height (MH), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the difference in mature height of a sire’s daughters compared to daughters of other sires. Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollars savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals. Components for computing $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.
CARCASS The genetic evaluation produces a single set of EPDs for carcass traits where the units of measure are in trait format and analyzed on an age-constant basis. Carcass Weight (CW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Marbling (Marb), is expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Ribeye Area (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Fat Thickness (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. FOOT SCORE Claw Set (Claw), is expressed in units of claw-set score. A lower EPD is more favorable, indicating a sire will produce progeny with more ideal claw set, which is toes that are symmetrical, even and appropriately spaced. Foot Angle (Angle), is expressed in units of foot-angle score. A lower EPD is more favorable, indicating a sire will produce progeny with more ideal foot angle, which is a 45-degree angle at the pastern joint with appropriate toe length and heel depth. $VALUE INDEXES $Value Indexes, reported in dollars per head, are multi-trait selection indexes where a higher value suggests more profit. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires if sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M), expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from conception to weaning. Increased selection pressure on $M aims to decrease overall mature cow size and improve foot structure and fertility while maintaining weaning weights consistent with today’s production. Weaned Calf Value ($W), expressed in dollars per head, provides the expected difference in future progeny preweaning performance from birth to weaning. Increased selection pressure on $W increases weaning and maternal milk traits while increasing mature cow size. Feedlot Value ($F), expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires. The underlying objective assumes commercial producers will retain ownership of cattle through the feedlot phase and sell fed cattle on a carcass weight basis with no considerations of premiums or discounts for quality and yield grade. Grid Value ($G) , expressed in dollars per carcass, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit, including quality and yield grade attributes, compared to progeny of other sires. Beef Value ($B), expressed in dollars per carcass, represents the expected average differences in the progeny postweaning performance and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. This index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot phase, and market these animals on a quality-based carcass grid. Combined Value ($C), expressed in dollars per head, is an index which includes all traits that make up both Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) and Beef Value ($B) with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. The remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers retain ownership of those cattle and eventually sell them on a quality-based carcass merit grid. EPDs directly influencing a combined index are: CED, CEM, WW, YW, Milk, HP, DOC, MW, Angle, Claw, DMI, Marb, CW, RE and Fat.
In reading this sale book, notice that beside each EPD will be the percentage ranking of the individual bull for that particular trait when compared to all other “Non-Parent Angus Bulls.”

At Haynes Cattle Co., we want more information than you can see by glancing at the critter, the EPDs or pedigree!! We believe in the DNA!
While there is no perfect bull, the mission at Haynes Cattle Co. Is to aid in the selection process for our customers. Knowing every operation has their own priorities for traits deemed important in their herds, the use of ANGUS GS genomics testing is a latest tool to increase reliability of our EPDs.

AGE-ADVANTAGED BULLS? I often see that term and wonder about the “advantage!” The yearlings in this sale are “winter yearling bulls,” calved in early January through mostly first half of February. For a June 1 turnout, these bulls would mostly be 16-18 months of age. I’m thinking the real “ advantage ” would be the extra calf crop from your investment in these “winter yearling bulls.” Then, consider, too, no pre-hardening time required. They’ve been out their whole life!

WINTER YEARLING BULLS
COW ENERGY VALUE It seems lots of folks have questions on $EN or Cow Energy Value. After you read the definition the AAA has for it on page 6, here are some thoughts. While every area of cattle country has different climates, feed resources, and thus limiting factors, consider this. Feed for a cowherd is an investment. It’s an investment in the calf she’s carrying and the calf she will conceive for the next year. Feed becomes an expense “only” when it’s more feed than she needs for her particular lactation energy requirement and mature size. So while it takes more feed dollars for a low $EN (energy savings) cowherd, it can be a good investment if you’re in an area of plentiful feedstuffs regularly. She will be expected to produce more pounds of saleable calf. On the other hand, ahigh $EN (energy savings) cowherd will require less feed dollars to support her lactation requirement and mature cow size. We just need to be wary of thinking my low energy maintenance cowherd doesn’t need any or much feed, they can just rough it. Because then your herd of actual 1,000 lb. cows with a 10 Milk EPD can have an uncommonly high rate of open females at season end. Now that is an expense!
