“Take time to do it right” is what I heard Dad say as I left the shop. I threw what I thought would be needed into the ’48 jeep. My job was to fix a hole in the north pasture fence. Man, was I excited since this was my first time driving the jeep by myself. Come to think about it, it was also first time fixing fence alone. You see I was just 9 or 10 years old (it gets younger every time I share this story). The excitement left quickly when I saw how much fence needed to be fixed. I knew there wasn’t going to be any shortcuts to this job. Hours later, as I was driving back to the yard (taking the long way back, of course) I started to wonder if what Dad had said was more than just a suggestion. Welcome to our 52 nd Annual “Focus on Performance Sale.” The sale offering is a direct result of taking the time to do it right for 99 years. Being recognized as a big-time performance herd is really only half of our story. True we did start weighing calves at specific times, like birth, weaning, and yearling, 69 years ago. It didn’t take us long to see that we had to measure these cattle with a scale to plot our progress. Prior to that beginning, we were insistent on breeding cattle that were good-sized, made right, looked good, and of the highest quality. Blending both the numbers with our strict visual demands has placed this herd in “one of a kind” position. Both Scott and Tyler are called upon to judge cattle shows literally from border to border and coast to coast. Their recognized expertise for evaluating cattle is used every day around this cow herd! You can rest assured that all have been performance tested, have current EPDs, genomic tested, and met the most stringent visual appraisal. Just a side bar note, I have been known “back in the day” to judge some as well!! There is one comment about our bulls and females that has really stuck with me all these years. It came from a customer of several years. He leaned up against the bull bunk and said, “Do you realize that your bulls have that special look about them?” I replied, “ I sure do. After two calf crops, “Agent” has proved to be the calving ease sire with unbelievable growth in his offspring. His numbers place him in the top 2% for both weaning and yearling. Top Gun was selected after Scott saw him as a mature bull. His size, natural muscling, and his big, sound foot were impressive. With this visual data and his strong EPD chart, he was used as a growth sire with excellent carcass traits. He has delivered as all his sons averaged a whopping 108 for weaning. They are gaining well as only one is doing less than 4.3#/day. They are power cattle for quality as well as performance.

Hollywood was a visual treat as a yearling. With his great phenotype and strong maternal background, he has been used for two years. He is a long-sided moderate birth weight bull with a big spread in his numbers to weaning. He ranks top 7% for WEPD and his foot score for angle is top 1%. His dam has established a solid record for growth over 7 calves. Her production is similar to her mother whose record is 8/107 for weaning and 7/107 for yearling. Lot 1 is typical of the RiseAbove bulls with his extra muscle definition and quality. He can be considered a borderline calving ease sire.

COULD BE USED ON HEIFERS If predictable was a cow family, I’d reckon it’d be this one. We strive to push the envelope each year bringing in new genetics, and at the end of the day it’s logical this beautiful 6-year-old cow is going to lay down and do her thing. “Logic” like his brothers before him is a big footed, monster hipped, masculine, dense made future herd bull ready to take his turn. What a calving ease prospect, the three generations on the maternal side have had 19 calves and averaged ratio only 94 at birth. His heifer pregnancy and CED both rank in top 10% of the breed. “Logic” and the 0032 cow already took the hard thinking out of it, just join the ride.

The Lot 3 bull is loaded with great numbers as well as a look that is so impressive. This beast of a bull was gaining nearly 5# a day for 90 days. His bold, deep body combined with his natural abundance of muscle is certainly an attention getter. His WEPD ranks in the top 15% and YEPD ranks top 10% combined with a great milk EPD of +35, which ranks in top 10%. What a combination of growth and maternal!! The dam ranks top 5% for YEPD, top 10% for WEPD, and her $F is at 3%. She is a beef machine in her look and production. She ranks within the breed at the top 10% for weaning, top 5% for yearling, and 30% for milk. This is her second bull calf. Her first was the Grizzly bull that was our second high seller last year to Duerre Farms, SD.

COULD BE USED ON HEIFERS This guy descends from over three generations of lighter birth weights. Yet, we have been able to maintain more than adequate growth through proper selection practices. He illustrates this with his birth weight of 68# and a weaning ratio of 107. His BEPD is a low +.2 and his growth EPDs rank top 10% for weaning and 20% for yearling. The $W is in top 1%, $F top 15%, and $M top 3%. Since the dam is out of our Everest bull, we come to expect excellent numbers across the board and cattle that are easy to look at. That is what we have in Lot 4.

SELLING 75% INTEREST AND FULL POSSESSION The good ol’ boys will tell you start ‘em at the ground, and I couldn’t agree more. This bull’s foot structure and size is built for the long haul, all the while he still is a big, square hipped power bull that gets us all fired up. We can also get fired up about his dam. What a record she has and is still going strong. Her MEPD of +34 ranks top 10%, her $M and $W values rank top 15%. The record she has on that many progeny is very hard to attain. This lot ranks top 10% for WEPD and $M value and his HP rank is 15%. When the grass is green and the cows are in heat this soft made, good looking stud isn’t going to miss a beat. You won’t lose sleep over “Victor,” he’s ready for battle.

Lot 6 is a direct son of the fabulous donor cow 8408. She produced our high and third high sellers last year. Her first calf was Cruise Control that was one of the most dominant performance sires that we have bred. She ranks in the top 2% of the breed for weaning, yearling, and milk. When you start with a cow that is so good and balanced in her numbers, it is easy to create outstanding individuals. This bull’s WEPD ranks top 1% and YEPD ranks 2%. His milk EPD of +35 ranks top 10% making him another of those tough to find combination bulls for growth and maternal. Take a good look at this beef bull.

Out of a first calf Bushs Custom Built heifer that is a delight to see. We expected and are getting tremendous results out of that sire group of females. This bull is extra dimensional for muscle, rib, and body length. He burns up the track for growth traits as he ranks top 1% of the breed for both WEPD and YEPD. Yet his milk EPD of +32 is in the top 15%. The genomic tests for weaning and yearling also rank him in top 1%. To put a little frosting on the cake, his docility ranks top 1% of the breed as well! We like this bull a lot!
