STUDENT PERSONNEL SERVICES
GUIDANCE Since the establishment of the Personnel Department, the fol lowing steps were taken in the development of the counseling pro gram. First, a centralized record system was adopted including cumulative interview forms. Second, a freshman testing program was begun to provide counselors with accurate data regarding the student's academic aptitude as well as personality traits. Third, channels were established with the Registrar's Office so that tran scripts and grade records were made available to counselors. There has also been the addition of freshman orientation composed of lectures and discussions brought by various members who are in touch with common problems. Finally, the office of Freshman Counse°Ior has been established to aid new students and others in selecting a major, conquering study problems and solving the many other problems which arise especially the first year of the student's college life. The objectives of the counseling program have been interrelated with the disciplinary system of the school. A minimum number of rules is combined with instruction in Christian principles of conduct for the purpose of encouraging students toward mature self-guidance. SCHOLARSHIPS, LOANS, AND STUDENT AID The college is able to provide varying amounts of financial assistance to worthy and qualified students in the form of grants, scholarships, loans, and jobs, or some combination of these. The total number and amount of awards made each year are based upon resources available from scholarship endowments, annual gifts restricted to scholarship awards, and the general funds of the college. The funds are the consequence of the desire of the college and its friends to recognize merit and to insure a balanced student body. All awards are made for one year and in most cases may be renewed on the basis of satisfactory work and financial need. Other bases for the selection of recipients of financial assistance are scholastic excellence, aptitude test scores, and the applicant's general record of activities and citizenship. Biola College participates in the College Scholarship Service (CSS) of the College Entrance Examination Board. Participants in CSS subscribe to the principle that the amount of financial aid granted a student should be based upon financial need. .The CSS assists colleges and universities and other agencies in determining the student's need for financial assistance.
