These tests are given during orienta­ tion week prior to registration for the fall semester. Those stu­ dents unable to make a predetermined minimum score on these tests will be admitted a~ music majors and minors on probation and must take Music 51 their first semester. Students who intend to major in applied music must pass a performance audition at the beginning of their first semester in residence. Deficiencies in the performance and/or academic aspects of a student's musical train­ ing must be removed before admission to the upper division music curriculum. / Activities. The Department of Music provides opportunities for experience in several types of vocal and instrumental ensembles, including the Biola Chorale, Collegians, Men's Glee, Women's Glee, Brass Ensemble, Woodwind Ensemble, Chamber Music Ensemble, and the La Mirada Symphony. All of the above ensembles are open to non-music majors as well as music majors by audition at the beginning of each semester. Students with an interest in organ are urged to be active in the student chapter of the American Guild of Organists. Those majoring in music education are expected to join the student chap­ ter of Music Educators National Conference. As part of the training program, informal recitals are given by all those receiving individual instruction in applied music. Periodically the more advanced students are presented in public recital. Graduation recitals are presented by seniors with an ap­ plied music major. Attendance at all music recitals is required of music majors. Opportunit ies. The increasing stature of Los Angeles as a music center provides exceptional opportunities for hearing lead­ ing artists. One of the nation's outstanding symphony orchestras, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, presents five series of concerts each season. In the field of chamber music, the Music Guild provides an additional series. Students are offered further opportunities to hear outstanding sacred music as presented by various churches and colleges in the Los Angeles area. Service Oppor tuni ties. The metropolitan area furnishes many opportunities for remunerative service in the field of music. There are frequent openings for competent organists, choir directors, soloists, and accompanists, both in churches and on various radio and television programs. Scholarships. Several music scholarships covering tuition and/ or applied music fees are available for musically talented students evidencing superior performing and academic ability. Graducition R equirements.
