Music Theory 51. FUNDAMENTALS OF MUSIC THEORY. (0)

Designed for entering music majors who are deficient in the theoretical fundamentals of music. Includes such fundamen­ tals as the notation of pitch in the treble and bass clefs, nota­ tion of rhythmic symbols, major and minor scales and their respective key signatures, other scales, intervals in all forms, performance terms and symbols. Two hours per week.

101. THEORY I. (2)

Scales, intervals, primary triads in root position, first and second inversion, secondary triads. Chord progression and cadences. Harmonization of melodies and figured bass; peri­ ods according to specification, and original work. Three hours each week. Prerequisite: Music 51 or passing a music theory entrance examination. Co-requisite: Music 111.

102. THEORY II. (2)

Secondary triads, dominant seventh chord, modulation, non­ chord tones, secondary dominants, diminished seventh chord, secondary seventh chords. Harmonization of melodies and figured bass, original work, and analysis. Three hours each week. Co-requisite: Music 112. 111. DICTATION AND SIGHT SINGING I. (1) Dictation and reading of melodies based on the harmonic material of 101. Two hours each week. Co-requisite: 101. 112. DICTATION AND SIGHT SINGING II. (1) Dictation and reading of melodies based on the harmonic material of 102. Two hours each week. Co-requisite: 102. 201. THEORY III. (2) Review of basic harmonic elements. Analysis of melodies of all periods. Introduction to eighteenth century counterpoint. Harmonic practice of the eighteenth century secondary domi­ nants, some seventh chords, modulations, non-harmonic tones, etc. Analysis of chorales and inventions. Harmonization of figured basses, melodies. Three hours each week. Prerequisite: 102.

202. THEORY IV. (2)

A study of the structural aspects of music of the nineteenth century, with emphasis on melody and harmony. Special at­ tention to distant modulations and other features of highly chromatic music. Analysis of representative works and prac­ tical application through harmonization of melodies and
