PHILOSOPHY Obi ective. The objective of this department is to acquaint the student with the principal problems and issues of philosophy, his­ torical and contemporary. The courses in philosophy are designed to contribute to the general education of the student, to aid him in reflective thinking, and to contribute to an understanding of the persistent problems of our culture. Department Minor: 20 units of which 12 must be upper divi­ sion. The student must select 301 and two courses from 302, 303, 308, or 403.

201. LOGIC. (3)

Presentation of the nature of logic with various types of logi­ cal reasoning: inductive, deductive, syllogistic. Elementary introduction to the scientific method.

202. INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY. (3)

An introduction to the problems, methods, concepts, and divisions of philosophy, designed to acquaint the student with the philosophic outlook and basic philosophic thought. Either semester.

301, 302. HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY. (3, 3)

The great philosophers and the great systems of philosophy from Thales to Hegel.

303. METAPHYSICS. (2)

The basic nature of metaphysical thought. Attention is paid to metaphysical categories, metaphysical theories, and great metaphysical thinkers.

304. EPISTEMOLOGY. (2)

An investigation into the nature, validity, and scope of hu­ man thought and knowledge. A study of basic theory and outstanding schools of epistemology.
