This department has a two-fold objective: (1) to give the student the broad view of science, its methodology and discoveries necessary for intelligent living in a technological age; and (2) to provide the instruction in specific fields needed for further work in science, psychology and education, and to provide the necessary program for the medical and para-medical profes sions . The Division of Science and Mathematics offers a BS degree in Biology, with a minor in Chemistry. As noted in the two pro grams listed below, the student may emphasis either the Botantical studies, or the Zoological studies. There is also offered the AB degree with emphasis in the Biological Sciences and Education. The AB degree does not require the minor in Chemistry. BS degree majors as well as AB degree majors shall be expected to pass a comprehensive oral examination at the end of their senior year. This will be administered by not less than 4 and not more than 6 faculty members from the science and liberal arts areas. If the student does not successfully pass the oral examination a written examination will be given. The seminar is not a requirement for the AB degree, but may be added to the curriculum if the science and education faculty feel so justified. Depnrtment Minor: 20 units, 12 of which must be upper divi sion. BS Degree with emphasis in Botany. Ma.for: Lower Division Requirements-Physical Science 100, General Botany 206. Upper Divi sion Requirements-303, 304, 305, 401, 404, 406, 407, 408. Minor: Lower Division Requirements - Chemistry 105, 106. Upper Division Requirements-Chemistry 301, 302, 402. BS. Degree with emphasis in Zoology, Designed for the pre medical, physical therapist, medical technologist, dental, and sci ence major who may proceed on toward graduate education.
