397,398. JUNIOR INDEPENDENT STUDY. (1-1) Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. Open only to speech majors. 401. ADVANCED PUBLIC SPEAKING. (3) Prerequisites: Speech 301, 302. The composition and delivery of speeches and sermons that are clear and forceful. 403. PUBLIC SPEAKING AS AN ART. (2) Prerequisites: Speech 301, 302 or the consent of the instructor. Finding, organizing, and using illustrations, beauty, humor, character description, concrete language and images, metaphdrs, prosody, etc. 404. THE USE OF BIBLICAL MATERIALS. (2) Prerequisites: Speech 301, 302. A thorough consideration of one hook of the Bible, paragraph by paragraph, with preparation' of it for speaking and preaching by development of appropriate outlines, teaching devices, illustrations, etc., on each portion. 413,414, SPEECH GUIDANCE. (2-2) Prerequisites: Speech 301, 302, 401, senior standing, and consent of instructor. A clinical, laboratory course open only to speech majors. One hour of class per week plus seyeral hours of clinical practice in evaluating, coaching, and guiding be ginning speech students. 497,498. SENIOR INDEPENDENT STUDY. (1-1) Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. Open only to speech majors. SUGGESTED COURSE FOR ENGLISH-SPEECH MAJORS The requirements for an English-Speech major are, the satisfactory completion of the courses prescribed with a concentration of 24 hours of English and 18 of Speech, a B average in the courses of the major in addition to a proficiency in the major field as indicated by the qualifying comprehensive examination. In addition to the courses enumerated in this schedule, the student must elect 6 hours in English, exclusive of English 205, and 9 hours of Speech. Either English 302 or 403 must be included, but it is recommended that both be taken. Directed Reading may be elected any semester for 1, 2, or 3 units of credit by arrangement with the English Department. Music and art appreciation courses when offered, and Psychology 205 and Sociology 202 should be included in the electives. With 30 hours required in Bible and doctrine, this curriculum provides the student with a second major in Bible.
