A study of the growth and development of the United States; colonization, pre- Revolutionary period, development of Constitutional government; social and economic influences in the nineteenth century; political development to the present day; the United States as a world power. 407,408. RESEARCH AND DIRECTED READING IN HISTORY. (1-3, 1-3) Advanced study in historical research methods, and special areas of historical significance suited to the student’s interest and need, hearing in mind the necessity of proper methodology for historical scholarship. ANTHROPOLOGY The aim is to provide the student with scientific data concerning the origin of man and the contemporary cultures of primitive societies. This material is especially adapted to the needs of students contemplating missionary service. 410. ANTHROPOLOGY. (2) The origin and antiquity of man; racial criteria and problems; anthropometry; culture, including material culture, social organization, language, religion, etc. SOCIOLOGY The aim of this course is to provide the student with the basic concepts of sociology and with a thoroughly Christian and scientific attitude towards social problems, institu­ tions, and human relations generally. 202. SOCIOLOGY.. (2) An introduction to the study of social groups, their interactions and their effects on the individual. Consideration of family, culture, race relations, and population problems. SUGGESTED COURSE FOR THE SOCIAL SCIENCE MAJOR The student who pursues this curriculum must take 35 hours in the Division of .Social Science, including 11 elective units in this field. In addition to the major in Social Science, this curriculum also embodies a major in Bible with 36 hours required in Bible and doctrine.
