(2) A study of some of the principles of modern harmony and their application to church music. 302. COUNTERPOINT. (2) A study of the contrapuntal technique of the sixteenth century. Exercises in writing two, three, and four-part motets in the style of Palestrina. 303. CHURCH MUSIC. (2) A thorough study and analysis of the music of the church, liturgy and seasonal music. Classification of church music, choirs and the adult choir in particular. Emphasis on the spiritual purpose of music in the church. 304. MUSIC IN CHRISTIAN EDUCATION. (2) A study of the music of the church school from the beginner’s to the college department. The formation and conduct of graded youth choirs. 305. FORM AND ANALYSIS. (2) The study of the outstanding forms in music, rondo-form variation, polyphonic, sonata allegro, free forms, suite form and song form. 307. CONCERT MUSIC REPERTOIRE. (2) A course of listening to recordings of the music classics as used by concert vocal and instrumental ensembles. Designed to provide an understanding of musical form and its expression. 308. The techniques of teaching singing, rhythm band, learning to play an auto-harp, and leading an appreciation lesson in music. 401-402. COMPOSITION I II. (3-3) The writing of original compositions in small forms for piano, voice, and small ensembles. A course for students who have had no experience in composing. 403. SCHOOL MUSIC METHODS. (3) A course to equip music majors with a knowledge of the curriculum, vocal tech­ nique, child voice problems, instrumental methods and problems in the elementary public schools. 404. ORCHESTRATION. (2-2). A study of the range, transposition, and other characteristics of all orchestral instruments, as well as practical arranging for the various combinations of the string, woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. 410. RECITAL OR THESIS. (1) A choice of a senior recital in the major subject, the rendition of original composi­ tions by theory majors, or the writing of a thesis on a subject chosen by the student and approved by the thesis committee. 59
