A non-technical course designed exclusively for non-mu sic majors to develop a more sympathetic and enjoyable acquaintance with musical art. No previous abili ty in the reading of music necessary. Includes a brief survey of music history with numerous musical illustrations, various types of mu sic, basic principles of music form, methods of listening, characteristics of various in struments, themes of well-known works. 105 INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC LITERATURE (3) An hi storical survey of music literature with emphasis on comparative analysis of musical styles, forms and performance media from the Renaissance to the present. Either semester. Prerequisite: Limited ability in the reading of music. 305 MUSIC HISTORY AND LITERATURE I (2) The history of music of Pre-Christian, Middle Ages, Renaissance, and early Baroque periods ( Pre-Christian age through 17th century). Prerequisite: 105. 306 MUSIC HISTORY AND LITERATURE II (2) The history of music of the Baroque and the early Classic periods (18th century). Prerequisite: 105. 405 MUSIC HISTORY AND LITERATURE III (2) The history of music of the late Classic and Romantic periods (19th century ) . Prerequisite: 105. 408 SONG LITERATURE (2) Survey of the song literature of Italy, Germany, France, Hussia, Scandinavia, Eng land, and America. Comparative analysis of various composers and their infl uence on the development of song literature. Offered Spring 1970 and alternate years. 420 ORGAN LITERATURE (2) An historical survey of organ literature with emphasis on problems of technique, registration, and interpretation .
